3. How could factories lead to bad working conditions?
Goal of the factory was to mass produce goods by machines run by water or steam - more product, faster, cheaper
Profit (money to the owner of the factory) is the most important thing! They used:
Unskilled workers
Child labor
Low pay

4. Could a Workhouse also be called a house of horrors?
Poor people would live in Workhouses
Orphans would be sent to live there
Gave them a place to live and a job
Families were separated and children were forced to work in factories and mines
Little food and horrible living conditions

5. What impact does a polluted environment have on people’s heath?
Most workers live in dirty housing (tenements)
Epidemics of disease like cholera (spread by dirty water)
Unpaved streets where garbage piles up.
Average life span in cities 17 years.
Horrible conditions spread EVERYWHERE – you can’t contain pollution!

6. How do long hours lead to accidents on the job?
People worked 14 hours a day/6 days a week.
Exhaustion leads to ACCIDENTS!
People suffered horrible injuries and there was no one to help you if you got hurt.

7. Why would a coal mine be even more dangerous than a factory?
Many women and children in mining because they are cheap.
Mining in DANGEROUS
Miles underground
Dangerous cave-ins
Gas could kill you
Soot in the air leads to Black Lung, cancer

8. Why would people argue AGAINST regulating factory and mining?
People argued in support of or against regulating the England’s factory system
Factory owners didn’t want regulations wanted to keep making money!
Eventually, laws were passed to protect children
The Factory Act of 1850, for example, limited the weekly hours that children could work to 60 and daily hours to 10.5.
