Degerenerative arthritis of the facet (also called zygoapophyseal, or Z-) joint is one of the most common causes of back pain. Severe degenerative hypertrophy may result in slippage of the higher vertebra forward (termed pseudolisthesis) which may lead to spinal and neural foraminal stenosis. Such cases may benefit from surgical stabilization using metallic implants.
