Writing a Thesis Statement
A thesis statement is the controlling idea of an essay. When you write an essay, you MUST clearly state your thesis at the end of the introduction paragraph. Identify the subject of your essay (or piece of literature you are writing about). Identify the main idea or topic of your essay. Specifically state the subtopics of your essay. These will be the controlling ideas for each of your body paragraphs. Finally, identify the reason you are writing about these things (or the author’s purpose for using them).
15
Writing a Thesis Statement
Example Prompt: In “The Most Dangerous Game,” how does Richard Connell use conflict to advance the plot and reveal the message of the story? Write a multi-paragraph essay using evidence from the story to support your ideas. Subject: Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” Main Idea: Use of conflicts Subtopics #1: man vs. nature – Rainsford falls into the Sea #2: man vs. man – Rainsford is hunted by General Zaroff Purpose: to advance the plot and develop the message that a person does not understand the full meaning of fear until he/she has been put into a situation where he/she must fight for his/her life. Thesis Statement: In “The Most Dangerous Game,” Connell uses the conflicts of man vs. nature and man vs. man in order to advance the plot of the story and reveal that a person cannot understand the full meaning of fear until he/she has been put into a life threatening situation.
16
Writing a Thesis Statement
Write a thesis statement for your essay. When are finished, ask yourself the following: Does my thesis directly address the writing assignment or prompt? Is my thesis statement specific enough? Does my thesis statement clearly state the three sub topics of my essay? Does my thesis state the “how and why” of my essay?
17
Writing an Introduction
Now that you have a thesis statement, you can begin writing the introduction. Begin with a hook. This should be a general statement to get the reader interested in what you have to say. It should somehow mention the overall topic but specifically give away your subject or thesis. DO NOT USE A QUESTION!!! Connect your hook with the subject of your essay. Make a statement explaining how the hook relates to what your essay is about. Provide background information. Offer a very brief summary of the plot along with the title and author of the story. Thesis statement. The thesis statement should always be the last sentence in the introduction. Clearly state your subtopics (what each body paragraph focuses on) and purpose (the reason you are writing this essay or the author’s main purpose/message/theme). If you have already given the title and author of the literature you are analyzing, it is not necessary to repeat it here.
18
Writing an Introduction
Example: Hook: Some people hunt for food, but most people hunt for sport. There are those who hunt deer, those who hunt duck, and even those who hunt big African game...but have you ever heard of someone hunting other human beings...abominable!. Connecting Statement: Well, that’s precisely what happens in “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell. Background Statement: “The Most Dangerous Game” is a story about an avid hunter named Sanger Rainsford who initially believes that hunting is a game between the hunter and the hunted and the animal being hunted cannot possibly understand the fear of death. His ideas on hunting soon change as he, himself, becomes the hunted. Thesis Statement: In this story, Connell uses traditional conflicts such as man vs. nature and man vs. self in order to advance the plot and reveal the message that a person cannot truly understand fear until he/she has been placed in a life threatening situation.

Writing an Introduction
Using the thesis statement you developed, write an introductory paragraph for your essay on your essay outline worksheet. When you are done, ask yourself: Does the hook catch the reader’s attention without using a question or giving away any important details? Does the next sentence connect the hook with the topic of your essay? Does the introduction include the title, author, main character(s) and/or plot of the story? Does the introduction clearly state your thesis with subtopics? Does the introduction make the focus of your essay clear to the reader?

Writing a Body Paragraph
In the body of the essay, the topic you have chosen must now be explained, described, or argued. Each main idea that you wrote down in your thesis statement will become one of the body paragraphs. Begin with a topic sentence to introduce your first subtopic. Be sure to clearly state your point. Introduce your supporting evidence. This is a good place to lead into your quote by explaining what is going on in the story and who is involved. Use a quote from the text (include page #). If you are using a character’s dialogue, make sure to state who is speaking. Explain the example you chose and how it relates to your topic. Finally, conclude your paragraph with a closing statement that restates your topic. Use transitions to connect ideas Should be 5-8 sentences.
25
Writing a Body Paragraph
Example: Topic Sentence: The first conflict that Rainsford faces is one of man vs. nature as he struggles to keep from drowning in the Caribbean Sea. Quote Set Up: While traveling aboard a yacht with his hunting partner on an expedition through the Amazon, Rainsford inadvertently falls overboard into the Caribbean and must fight against the vast openness of the sea. Text Quote: Connell writes, “He struggled up to the surface and tried to cry out, but the wash from the speeding yacht slapped him in the face, and the salt water in his open mouth made him gag and strangle” (Connell, 57). Analysis: In other words, Rainsford must struggle with his fear of drowning and not allow himself to panic. Closing Sentence: Therefore, Connell uses Rainsford’s conflict with the open sea to demonstrate how one might react when faced with a life threatening situation.

Writing a Body Paragraph
Edit and revise your MDG writing assignments 1 & 2 then rewrite them as body paragraphs on your essay outline worksheet. After you are done, ask yourself the following: Does my paragraph begin with a transition and a topic sentence? Does it include a quote from the text with page # to support my ideas? Does it clearly explain the part of the text in which the quote takes place? Does it clearly explain how the quotes support my ideas? Does it conclude with a closing sentence that restates my topic and ends the paragraph? Does it include one and ONLY one topic? Do the sentences flow from one idea to the next?
28
Using Transitions Effectively
Transitions join, or glue, ideas together. They make your sentences flow better and add variety. During your editing and revising, make sure to add transitions appropriately. Each paragraph should have at least 2-3 transitions. Below is a list of possible transitions you can use. For example For instance In addition On the other hand After that Meanwhile However Consequently In general In fact After awhile Furthermore In conclusion Therefore As a result To clarify

Writing a Conclusion The conclusion is the final paragraph of the essay. It reminds the reader of the points you made and is your last chance to convince the reader that your ideas are valid. A good concluding paragraph should be at least three sentences and : Restate the thesis (using different words). Summarize the main points of the essay. Make a final comment about the essay's main idea and somehow connects back to the beginning/hook of the essay. Leave the reader with a final thought DO NOT INTRODUCE NEW IDEAS IN A CONCLUSION. A conclusion only restates or gives further commentary on ideas already discussed in the essay.
32
Writing a Conclusion Example:
Restate thesis: In conclusion, Connell uses some of the conflicts that the main character Rainsford faces in the story in order to advance the plot and get his message across. Summarize Main Points: Through Rainsford’s battles of falling overboard into the open sea and being hunted by a deranged man on a private mysterious island, the reader is able to infer that Rainsford has learned what it feels like to be faced with death. Final Thought connecting to meaning/hook: Consequently, he now understands how the hunted jaguar feels.
33
Model Conclusion
34
Writing a Conclusion On your essay outline worksheet, write a concluding paragraph for your essay. When you are done, ask yourself: Does the conclusion clearly remind the reader of the thesis statement? Is the thesis stated in different words than in the introduction? Does the conclusion summarize your main points? Does the conclusion seem to be linked to the beginning of the essay? Does the conclusion leave the reader with something interesting to think about?
