What is an Ideology? Belief system which describes a certain condition of life Often strongly believed in/aura of ultimate truth Way of interpreting the past, present, focusing on the creation of the future Applicable to political, economic, social, intellectual, cultural arenas

Nazism A specific type of fascism developed by Hitler in Germany More blatant in racist convictions and policies Believes in the superiority of the “Aryan” race “Nazi” comes from the first two syllables of the German word for the group “The National Socialist German Workers Party.” POLITICAL “Aryan” is actually not identified with one race; rather it describes a certain group of people with a common language core of development

Capitalism A system of gaining and prompting wealth through private ownership and operation of businesses Supply and demand aspects of a market economy and the need for competition is supreme Purpose is to produce a profit which can be reinvested to produce more profit ECONOMIC

Socialism A system for bettering the condition of the people by having the state own and control the means of distribution and production of major industries Goal: eliminate class inequalities (extremely anti-fascist) Government determines the needs and provides for them Possible to have a mixed economy with capitalism and socialism (ex: Sweden) USSR founded on this ideology ECONOMIC

Communism A system in which all means of production are owned by the people No private property; everything is shared equally According to Marx, this is the final stage of socialism in which a classless society is achieved No society has yet reached the goal of Marxian socialism ECONOMIC

Communism Industrial workers = hammer Farm workers = sickle The Hammer and Sickle symbol was created by Soviets to indicate the support of the working class for the regime and its goals.
