UNIFICATION – Process of being united or made into whole Significance– Sufficiently great or important. Worthy of attention. Deities– Divine status, quality, or nature. Gods or goddesses. Sumarize – Sum it up; give brief statement of main points of something.

3 Geography Nile River – flows north miles long. Longest river in the world. Empties into the Mediterranean Sea. Egypt is part of the Sahara Desert. Silt – deposit from the Nile River - makes soil Fertile Egyptians use Nile for irrigation, dams, dikes, water storage. Upper Egypt: Southern Egypt. Lower Egypt: Northern Egypt. (Fertile)

4 Religion Polytheism – Belief in gods who controls nature & life.
Hapi = flood god, Ra = sun god, Osiris = god of afterlife, Horus = sky god Used mummification to preserve body for afterlife. Believed that the body and possessions that were buried with person were used in the afterlife. Egyptians believed that kings/pharaohs were living gods that lived forever. Pyramids built to house their dead bodies and possessions

Huge pyramids, temples, monuments still survive Detailed records still survive Advancement of agriculture. Irrigation. Paper made from Papyrus Ships built for trade along Nile Hieroglyphics – form of writing = detailed records

8 Political System Upper & Lower Egypt – unite in 3100 BC (King Narmer - 1st King) 1st ever nation state – people governed together united by language 31 dynasties Government was organized into one central leader or Pharaoh. Pharaoh – supernatural powers. Absolute authority. After death acted like a mediator between humans and gods. Pharaohs could be either males or females (Queen Hatshepsut)

9 Distinct eras: Old Kingdom, Middle Kingdom, New Kingdom
Old Kingdom – long, stable and prosperous. Ends with a civil war Middle Kingdom – Hyksos settle and took over New Kingdom – Egyptian took it from Hyksos and reunites Upper & Lower Egypt Thutmose III expands Egypt to its largest size Ramses the Great makes Egypt prosperous

10 Economy Egyptians grew grains such as wheat and barley
Traded with southwestern Asia, eastern Africa and eastern Mediterranean Nile used for transport of resources: grain, papyrus, linen, pottery & gold Bartered for copper, ebony, iron, and wood – used by builders & artisans Robbers & pirates made trade dangerous.

12 Social Class Pharaoh was top of society class system
Farmers and unskilled workers made up most of Egypt’s population Most Egyptians did not live in cities, but along river banks (95%) men were more powerful (government & workforce).
