What was the Elizabethan Religious Settlement? Martin Luther Urlich Zwingli John Calvin Desiderus Erasmus All four men were leading Protestants, Puritans or Humanists in the 16th century. Elizabeth had to decide how ‘Protestant’ her Religious Settlement should be. She looked at the religious beliefs of Protestantism but remember she was fundamentally a politique so all decisions she made – even about her Act of Uniformity – was hugely influenced by political outcomes, far more so than religious fervour.
