1 Welcome to College English 2!

2 Topics for today About your teacher Grades Classroom Rules
Things you’ll need Homework for next week

3 About Your Teacher My name is Dan Leonard You can call me “Dan”
This is my fiftth year at KGU, but….

4 I’ve been living in Korea since 2001

5 Dan’s Life in Korea I live in Suwon with my two beautiful cats.

6 Dan’s Teaching Career I taught high school Spanish in the USA
I’ve taught English to all ages in Korea, from kindergarten to businessmen I’ve been teaching English to Korean university students for over 9 years.

7 Questions about me?

8 Grades I follow the department’s relative grading scheme: 20% - 40%
Letter Grade Percentage Grade Grade Points Percentage of Students A+ 95-100 4.5 20% - 40% A 90-94 4.0 B+ 85-89 3.5 40% - 60% B 80-84 3.0 C+ 75-79 2.5 0% - 40% C 70-74 2.0 D+ 65-69 1.5 D 60-64 1.0 F 0-59 You’re competing with your classmates for your grade. Who gets which grades is up to you!

9 What does that mean? In a class of 20 students, I can give the following grades: A or A+ = 4-8 students B or B+ = 8-12 students C+ - F = 0-8 students Everyone can get an A or B in my class, but that does not mean that everyone will if you don’t want to do the work to earn it.

10 How do I decide your grades?
This is how your grade is determined: Attendance % Class Participation 10% Paragraphs (4) 20% Quizzes (2) 10% Midterm exam 25% Final Exam 25%

11 Classroom Rules My rules are fair and apply to all students equally.
These rules are here to help everyone learn. How well you follow these rules helps determine your grade, especially your Class Participation grade. There will be a test next week on these rules!

12 Come to class! If you are not here, I cannot help you learn.
If you are not here, you will miss important material, which will make it harder for you to do well on the quizzes, homework, and exams. Each time you miss class with no excuse from a doctor or professor, you lose 3% of your grade. You must sign in to class at the beginning and have your KGU attendance app ready. You must bring any excuse notes to me within a week of the class you missed. If you are not here for any reason, you also lose all Class Participation points for the day. If you have 4 unexcused absences, you get an F for the class.

13 What is a valid excuse to miss class?
A note from a doctor showing that you were sick or hurt. (No prescriptions) A note from a professor showing that you had to go to a department event for your major (ex. MT) Direct orders from the Korean military If you bring me this note within one week of the class you missed you will not lose attendance points (-3%). However, you will get a zero for class participation for that day.

14 The following are NOT valid excuses to visit my class:
Extracurricular (club) activities Prescriptions Notes from the Student Union If you miss class and bring me notes showing that these were your reasons for being absent you will still lose -3% from your grade.

15 Come to class on time This class starts at 2:00 p.m.
If you are late, you lose 1% of your grade. If you are more than 15 minutes late, I mark you absent (-3%) If you come in late, make sure I see you so I can change your grade from absent (-3%) to late (-1%) 3 lates = 1 absence Every late student interrupts this class, which is not fair to the rest of the class, so please be on time.

16 Holidays and Make-up Classes
The following days are university holidays: September 24th -26th (Korean Harvest Moon Festival) October 3rd (National Foundation Day) October 9th (Korean Language Day) November 8th (KGU Anniversary) KGU requires me to hold make-up classes for each day of class missed due to holidays. Make up days for Chusok will be held the week after Week 15, and will be your Final Exam. Attendance will be mandatory. All other make up days will be held on the day of the holiday. Attendance will be optional, and rewarded with 1% of extra credit.

17 Be prepared for class At the beginning of class, I will check to make sure you have your: Textbook (blank at the beginning of the semester) Pen/pencil Homework Nametag A partner We use the textbook every class, You lose all class participation points for the day.

18 Turn in your homework on time
I will assign you regular homework that is due the next week to reinforce what I teach in class. Homework paragraphs are worth 20% of your grade. All homework assignments will be posted on the class website: kgucollegeenglish2.wordpress.com If you need help with your homework or paragraphs, please me or come to my office hours. I’m happy to help! Absence from class does not excuse you from completing and submitting homework on time. If you know you’re going to miss class, me your homework or bring it to my office before the homework is due. I never accept late homework.

19 Be polite Please don’t sit in the back of the classroom
Listen to me, listen to your classmates. When I say, “Ladies and Gentlemen!” , you should stop, look, and listen. If you have to leave to go to the bathroom or drink water, just say “Excuse me” and go. You don’t have to ask! Treat the rest of the class the way you would like to be treated.

20 Ask and answer questions
When I ask you a question, do your best to answer. If you don’t know the answer…. Guess! Say “I don’t know.” It’s OK! When you don’t understand something in class, please ask me about it.

21 Don’t ask me to end class early
This class ends at 4:50 p.m. If you want to go early, you can go! ….and I will take a -3% penalty from your grade. You’re an adult, the choice is yours.

22 Don’t sleep Sleeping in class is worse than not coming at all.
If you’re tired, go get a cup of coffee and come back. If you can’t stay awake in class, I will ask you to leave. Sleeping in class counts as an absence (-3%).

23 Don’t cheat Your work must be yours.
It’s easy for me to tell if you’ve copied your written assignments from a book, web site, internet translation program, or another student. If you cheat once, you will get a 0% grade for that homework assignment or test. If you cheat twice, I will report you, and you will get an F for the class.

24 Questions? This presentation and my syllabus are available on the class web site: kgucollegeenglish2.wordpress.com If anything is unclear about what I expect from you, please talk to me.
