6 Chapter 4: No Longer Slaves
We were in slavery under the basic principles of the world… how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable principles? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again? Galatians 4:3,9 As a dog returns to its vomit, so fools repeat their folly. Prov 26:11

7 Now Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died, but the Israelites were exceedingly fruitful; they multiplied greatly, increased in numbers and became so numerous that the land was filled with them. (Ex 1:6-7)

8 Now Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died, but the Israelites were exceedingly fruitful; they multiplied greatly, increased in numbers and became so numerous that the land was filled with them. (Ex 1:6-7) Then a new king, to whom Joseph meant nothing, came to power in Egypt… So they put slave masters over them to oppress them with forced labor… and worked them ruthlessly. They made their lives bitter with harsh labor in brick and mortar and with all kinds of work in the fields; in all their harsh labor the Egyptians worked them ruthlessly. (Ex 1:8,11-14)

9 During that long period, the king of Egypt died
During that long period, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned in their slavery and cried out, and their cry for help because of their slavery went up to God. God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob. So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them. (Ex 2:23-25)

10 During that long period, the king of Egypt died
During that long period, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned in their slavery and cried out, and their cry for help because of their slavery went up to God. God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob. So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them. (Ex 2:23-25) Then the Lord said to him, “Know for certain that for four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved and mistreated there. But... afterward they will come out with great possessions. (Gen 15:13-14)

11 During that long period, the king of Egypt died
During that long period, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned in their slavery and cried out, and their cry for help because of their slavery went up to God. God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob. So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them. (Ex 2:23-25) “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. So I have come down to rescue them (Ex 3:7-8)

12 And the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring the Israelites out of it. (Ex 7:5) But I will gain glory for myself through Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord.”… The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I gain glory through Pharaoh, his chariots and his horsemen.” (Ex 14:4,18)

13 And the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring the Israelites out of it… The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I gain glory through Pharaoh, his chariots and his horsemen.” (Ex 7:5, 14:18) tell your children and grandchildren... how I performed my signs among them, that you may know that I am the Lord.” (Ex 10:1-2)

14 They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die?... Didn’t we say to you in Egypt, ‘Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians’? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!” (14:11-12) “If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted” (16:3) But the people were thirsty for water there, and they grumbled against Moses. They said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?” (17:3 )

15 “Make the work harder for the people so that they keep working”…
Then the slave drivers and the overseers went out and said to the people, “This is what Pharaoh says: ‘I will not give you any more straw. Go and get your own straw wherever you can find it, but your work will not be reduced at all.’”… And Pharaoh’s slave drivers beat the Israelite overseers they had appointed, demanding, “Why haven’t you met your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as before?”… The Israelite overseers realized they were in trouble (Ex 5:9-19)

16 These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us… Therefore , be careful if you think you are standing firm that you don’t fall! (1 Cor 10:11-12)

17 These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us… Therefore, be careful if you think you are standing firm that you don’t fall! (1 Cor 10:11-12) Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin (John 8:34) We were in slavery under the basic principles of the world (Gal 4:3) People are slaves to whatever has mastered them. (2 Pet 2:19)

23 them all over again? (Galatians 4:3,9)
Performance: enslaved by what I do Possessions: enslaved by what I have/experience Popularity: enslaved by how others see me Prerogative: enslaved by freedom We were in slavery under the basic principles of the world… But now that you know God -or rather are known by God -how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable principles? 24 When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters and led them safely out of the city, for the Lord was merciful to them. As soon as they had brought them out, one of them said, “Flee for your lives! Don’t look back, and don’t stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!”… But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. (Gen 19:16-17,26)

25 For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. They all ate the same spiritual food and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness. Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. (1 Cor 10:1-6)

26 Performance: enslaved by what I do
Possessions: enslaved by what I have/experience Popularity: enslaved by how others see me Prerogative: enslaved by freedom Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. (1 Cor 10:6) Each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin (James 1:14-15 )

27 Performance: enslaved by what I do
Possessions: enslaved by what I have/experience Popularity: enslaved by how others see me Prerogative: enslaved by freedom It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. (Gal 5:1)

28 Performance: enslaved by what I do
Possessions: enslaved by what I have/experience Popularity: enslaved by how others see me Prerogative: enslaved by freedom Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith. (Heb 12:1-2 )

29 Performance: enslaved by what I do
Possessions: enslaved by what I have/experience Popularity: enslaved by how others see me Prerogative: enslaved by freedom So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh… But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law (Gal 5:16-18 )
