1 Large Steel Seamless Pressure Vessels
CPI Large Steel Seamless Pressure Vessels Kevin Collins National Center of Manufacturing Sciences March 9, 2005 Dearborn, MI

2 Overview CP Industries manufactures large seamless pressure vessels for the storage of gases under high pressure. Pioneered the development of high pressure cylinders. ASME DOT Military ISO

9 Manufacturing Process
Raw Material is Seamless Pipe End Domes are Hot Forged Spun or Hammered Heat Treated - Liquid Quench & Temper Grit Blast and Condition O.D. Machine Necks with I.D. and O.D. Threads Grit Blast and Condition I.D. Vacuum, Steam Clean & Dry I.D. Install End Plugs Solvent Wash and Paint Purge with Dry Nitrogen Assemble

10 Quality and Inspection Process
All Pipe is Ultrasonic Tested Properties are Tested from Test Ring Yield Tensile Elongation Charpy V Notch Brinell Hardness Tests O.D. is Magnetic Particle Inspected Machined Threads are Dye Penetrant Tested Hydrostatic Test Final Ultrasonic Inspection Assemblies are Air Tested Inspections and Testing Witnessed by Independent Agencies

11 Specifications Design specification is contingent on what gas is used and how it is used. Hydrogen - Ground ASME UPV Code Section VIII Div 1 Newest Version Current Addenda and Appendix 22 Material - ASME SA 372 Grade J Class 70 Hydrogen - Transported DOT - 3AAX (Pressure) Material - AISI 4130X

12 Concerns Hydrogen is Difficult to Store Efficiently
Requires Higher Pressures than Other Gases Higher Pressure Results in Smaller O.D.’s and Thicker Walls More Difficult to Attain Required Properties

13 Solutions CPI working with ASME and Compressed Gas Association
Working Committees have Been Formed to Address Hydrogen Storage Research Laboratories such as Sandia National Laboratories are Testing Materials
