2 Aims of the meeting: To explain what will happen when your child comes to Crickhowell Primary. To explain the school uniform. To explain the daily routine in the Foundation Phase. To explain the lunchtime arrangements. 2

3 What a typical Foundation Phase day looks like
The children will line up on the playground and will be greeted by their class teacher. Registration RWI session Snack Playtime Numeracy/Big Maths Lunchtime Afternoon activities It would help the teachers and the children if they are able to fasten and unfasten their own coats and recognise their own names.

4 The 7 areas of learning in the Early Years Foundation Phase
In Reception there are 7 areas of learning which we cover throughout the year. Personal, Social and Emotional Development Communication and Language Physical Development Literacy Numeracy Understanding the World Expressive Arts and Design

5 Personal, Social and Emotional development
Making relationships- forming good relationships with adults and their peers and working together. Self confidence and self awareness- independent and confident learners, confident to talk to other people in a variety of situations. Managing feelings and behaviours- understanding what is right, wrong and why, work as part of a group or class taking turns and sharing, show own feelings in appropriate ways.

6 Communication and Language
Listening and attention- listening to stories, discussions and responding to what is happening. Ask questions about what they have heard. Understanding- following instructions involving more than one step. Answering questions such as how and why in response to stories and events. Speaking- using past, present and future terms correctly, making own stories and explaining ideas and events.

7 Physical Development Moving and handling- good control and co-ordination in large and small scale movements. Moving confidently in a range of ways. Health and self-care- keeping healthy, dressing and undressing independently.

8 Literacy Reading- using phonic knowledge to read simple sentences, be able to talk about what they have read. Writing- using phonics knowledge to write words, writing key words and tricky words (I, the), be able to write simple sentences.

9 Mathematics Numbers- count and order numbers to 20, find one more and one less than a number to 20, add and subtract two numbers, solve problems, be able to half, double and share numbers and objects. Shape, space and measures- use language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money. Making and talking about patterns, talking about and describing shapes.

10 Understanding the world
People and communities- be able to talk about past and present events in their own lives, understand there are similarities and differences between people, families, communities and traditions. The world- to know about similarities and differences in places, objects, materials and living things. To make observations of animals and plants and talk about the changes. Technology- children use technology for a range of purposes.

11 Expressive arts and design
Exploring and using media and materials- children sing songs, make music and dance. To safely use and explore a variety of materials, tool and techniques safely. Being imaginative- children represent their thoughts, ideas and feelings through design and technology, art, music, dance, role play and stories.

12 Play in the Foundation Phase
Play is an important part of the daily routine in the foundation stage. Play in the foundation stage is well planned by the reception team and is aimed at developing the children’s ability to explore creatively. The play that the children engage in helps to enhance the children’s learning as they are continually learning through a wide variety of activities.

13 Read, Write, Inc At Crickhowell Primary School we use the Read, Write, Inc phonics scheme in the foundation stage. The children learn the letter sounds alongside the action. This helps the children to remember the sound for example ‘s’ is taught using the story of a snake and the action of a snake moving. The children will need to be confident with all of the letter sounds before they move onto reading. We will hold a RWI meeting in the Autumn term.

14 What is Big Maths? It is a daily sequential programme of mental maths provision with a strong emphasis on learned facts and developing the mental agility to do something with these facts. It develops core skills in one clear method. All are taught in the same way, repeatedly, to embed these fundamental skills. Big Maths highlights how small steps of progress with core numeracy follow on logically from one to the next.

15 What the children will need
Please send a pound coin (or £8 for the half-term) in a named purse or envelope to school every Monday for snack. Children will need a pair of wellies in school. Please name everything. Please make sure everything has your child’s name clearly marked on it. We will be going out in all weathers, please remember your child’s coat. Please can you ensure that your child always has a named change of clothes in school. On Wednesdays please can children wear old clothes. No uniforms. Book bag available from the school office.

To help the class teachers during the PE lessons please help to teach your child to dress and undress themselves. To help the class teachers we do ask that all clothing is clearly labelled with the children’s name.

18 Wild Walks/Theme Days This year Wild Walks and theme days will be on alternate weeks, day to be confirmed. We will be going for walks in the locality and would be very grateful for your help on these walks. You will be given a list of dates and a form to return to us informing us when you are able to help. A minimum of four parent helpers will be needed each week. On these days please can children wear old clothes and on Wild Walk weeks a spare set of clothes would be a good idea. We also recommend that they have a pair of wellington boots to keep at school, clearly named.

21 Assessment You will be informed of your child’s progress at the parent meetings in the Autumn and Spring term and through a formal report at the end of the school year.

22 Cornerstone Topics We’ll start the Autumn term with the topic, Superheroes. Intergalactic greetings, young heroes. It’s time to rescue the planet from evil villains! Who’s your favourite superhero? Spider-Man? Wonder Woman? Maybe your heroes are ordinary people who’ve achieved great things. Or is it those people who save lives in our emergency services that you admire most? Superheroes have super senses. Use yours to identify mystery items by their smells, taste, sound and touch.
