2. Why is Alexander Fleming a Great Briton?
He made a chance discovery of penicillin when the petri dishes he had been observing grew mould on them.
His work inspired Florey and Chain to test and mass produce penicillin as the first antibiotic.
Penicillin was the first successful cure of infection which saved many lives during World War II. This then led to other antibiotics being produced.
