Micro-organisms & Fermentation
DL6.5: Assess effects of micro-organisms on past and present society, and contributions of science and technology to human understanding of micro-organisms Indicator: Discuss positive impacts of micro-organisms for humans (e.g. food production & fermentation)
2
Review from last class: What are Micro-organisms?
Are micro-organisms living things, or non-living things? Are they tiny? Or, are they big? Are they single-cellular or multi-cellular? Do they require food? Air? Water? Do they make waste? How are they important to humans?
3
Yeast & the Fermentation Process
What is yeast? A single-celled micro-organism in the fungi family What does it eat? Feeds off of sugar and produces a waste product What is fermentation? Fermentation is a metabolic process that converts sugars into acids, gases and/or alcohol. It occurs in yeast, bacteria and other microorganisms as well as oxygen starved muscle cells. Does anyone know what foods we eat that have been through the fermentation process?

Not many people can resist the smell of BREAD….
5
How does bread get so light, fluffy & delicious
How does bread get so light, fluffy & delicious? How does yeast make bread rise? (start video at 2:09) In your science journals jot down 3-4 facts about yeast…
6
What did we learn from the short video?
7
Let’s get ready to do our experiment! Review worksheet & instructions
Do this! Not this!
8
Safety Concerns: Broken glass procedures
Wear safety glasses when disposing of the balloon, pointing the balloon downwards into the garbage can Wash hands thoroughly after handling the yeast
