Salvation of the Elect 2 Timothy 2:7-13
2
The Surety of Salvation
3
Christ is the “seed of David”; He identified with humanity.
Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. Hebrews 2:17
4
Christ is the “seed of David”; He identified with humanity.
15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:15-16
5
Christ is “risen from the dead”, so He was declared to be God’s Son
and declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead. Romans 1:4
6
God had the power to bring:
18 the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power 20 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places,
7
God had the power to bring:
21 far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. 22 And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, Ephesians 1:18-22
8
God had the power to bring:
1 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, 2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, 3 among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others. Ephesians 2:1-3
9
Our faith in Christ’s resurrection is closely tied to our resurrection from spiritual death
buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. Colossians 2:12
10
The Source of Salvation
11
The Source of Salvation
Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 2 Timothy 2:10
12
Man cannot save himself
who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began, 2 Timothy 1:9
13
Man cannot save himself
not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, Titus 3:5
14
Man cannot save himself
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. Ephesians 2:8-9
15
Christ is Our Savior This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. 1 Timothy 1:15
16
Salvation is “in Him” – in a special relationship to Christ.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17
17
Salvation is “in Him” – in a special relationship to Christ.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, Ephesians 1:3
18
The Substance of Salvation
19
Eternal Glory Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 2 Timothy 2:10
20
Eternal Glory eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; Romans 2:7
21
Eternal Glory 20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself. Philippians 3:20-21
22
Living with Christ This is a faithful saying: For if we died with Him, We shall also live with Him. 2 Timothy 2:11
23
Living with Christ Advocate - 1 John 2:1-2 Example - 1 Peter 2:21 High Priest - Hebrews 4:15-16 Savior - Hebrews 7:25
24
Living with Christ 1 “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. John 14:1-3
25
Reigning with Christ If we endure, We shall also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us. 2 Timothy 2:12
26
Lessons for Us Today
27
Salvation is Conditional
26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Galatians 3:26-27
28
Salvation is Conditional
4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. 5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. John 15:4-6
29
If… If We Endure If we endure, We shall also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us. 2 Timothy 2:12
30
If… If We Deny Him If we endure, We shall also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us. 2 Timothy 2:12
31
If… If We Are Faithless If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself. 2 Timothy 2:13
32
Conclusion 1. The Christian has the certainty of Salvation if we are faithful. 2. The Non-Christian has the certainty of being condemned for all eternity.
