ENG 205 CE-ME-MECE-MSE UNIT 12 STEEL

BASIC CONCEPTS STEEL: It is the most widely used material in engineering. It is an alloy of iron and carbon. There are two types of steel: 1. Carbon Steels 2. Alloy Steels

CARBON STEELS Carbon steels consist of iron and carbon and contain no significant quantities of other metals. Carbon steels can be divided into three main grades: 1. Mild Steel 2. Medium Carbon Steel 3. High Carbon Steel

TYPES OF CARBON STEELS 1. Mild Steel: It is the most widely used grade. It is a low carbon steel which contains up to approximately 0.3% carbon. 2. Medium Carbon Steel: It contains between approximately 0.3% and 0.6% carbon. 3. High Carbon Steel: It contains between approximately 0.6% and 1.4% carbon.

ALLOY STEELS Alloy Steels consist of iron, carbon and one or more alloying materials. There are four specific grades of alloy steel: 1. Low Alloy Steels 2. High Strength Low Alloy Steels (HSLA) 3. Stainless Steel 4. Tool Steels

TYPES OF ALLOY STEELS 1. Low Alloy Steel: It contains 90% or more iron, and up to approximately 10% of alloying metals such as chromium, nickel, manganese, molybdenum and vanadium. 2. High Strength Low Alloy Steel (HSLA): It contains smaller quantities of the metals such as chromium, nickel, manganese, molybdenum and vanadium.

TYPES OF ALLOY STEELS cont 3. Stainless Steel: It contains chromium as well as other metals such as nickel and it does not rust. 4. Tool Steels: They are extremely hard, and are used in cutting tools. They contain tungsten and/or cobalt. A widely used grade of tool steel is high-speed steel, which is used in cutting tools that operate at high temperatures, such as drill bits.

IMPORTANT!!! The terms carbon steel and alloy steel can cause confusion, As carbon steels are also alloys, and Alloy steels also contain carbon.

CORROSION Corrosion occurs when the surface of steel (mild steel) progressively deteriorates due to a chemical reaction. This reaction takes place between the iron in the steel and the oxygen (O2) in the air, to form iron dioxide.

CORROSION cont In some metals, such as aluminium (Al), the presence of corrosion is not a problem, as the layer of oxide around the metal remains hard, which prevents it from oxidizing any further. However, when mild steel goes rusty, the rust on the surface comes off continuously, and a new rusty layer forms, progressively eating into metal.

Comp. Qs 1. What is corrosion? Explain it briefly. 2. What are the thpes of alloy steels? Explain them briefly. 3. What are the carbon steels? Explain them briefly.

Answers 1. Corrosion: It occurs when the surface of steel (mild steel) progressively deteriorates due to a chemical reaction. 2. There are four types of alloys: a. Low Alloy Steel: It contains 90% or more iron, and up to approximately 10% of alloying metals such as chromium, nickel, manganese, molybdenum and vanadium. b. High Strength Low Alloy Steel (HSLA): It contains smaller quantities of the metals such as chromium, nickel, manganese, molybdenum and vanadium. c. Stainless Steel: It contains chromium as well as other metals such as nickel and it does not rust. d. Tool Steels: They are extremely hard, and are used in cutting tools. They contain tungsten and/or cobalt.
