1 Timelines & Calendars

2 What is a timeline? A way of keeping track of events in a chronological order. Can be used to document historical events, biographical events of someone’s life, used in science to show biological sequences, and etc. Events are presented with a graphic (image) Different cultures/societies have different ways to track what time of year it is and when certain festivals or events will happen.

3 Gregorian Timeline One year has 365 days (52 weeks).
Calendar that Canadians use.

4 Daylight Saving Time (DST)
What is it? Why do we do it? Why? To maximize the amount of daylight hours. Daylight lasts longer in summer but are shorter in winter. In the winter we set our clocks: One hour back. (Remember to do this November 5!) In the summer we set our clocks: One hour forward

5 Linear Timelines Often used by Europeans and Westerners.
Shows past, present, (and sometimes) the future. Can be horizontal or vertical.

6 Cyclical Timelines Salish/Saanich People
Follows the changes of nature. Based off of seasonal activities such as went to gather, hunt, and plant. Time is a cycle that will repeat itself and will flow back into one another.

8 Chinese Lunar Calendar (Asian Lunar Calendar)
Lunisolar calendar. Months start when a new moon (dark moon) is out. When the sun and moon block each other out at night. Start of the new year occurs between January 21st – February 20th. Often referred to as Chinese New Year’s or Lunar New Year. Due to Chinese culture being heavily influenced by myth and reading of natural signs, other forms of time have been invented.
