1 ALEKS Training Part 2 Instructor Experience
July 17, 2017 1-3pm

2 Course Outcomes After completing this workshop, participants will be able to: Inspect the most useful reports and evaluate student progress Upload your own resources for your students Create assignments - quizzes and tests Change due dates and create individualized extensions Communicate with your students Utilize ALEKS data to maximize class time

3 Why ALEKS? Student advantages Instructor advantages
Maps out a learning path for each individual More than just a homework system. ALEKS regularly assesses students to make sure material is learned Based on brain/learning research Cost effective ALEKS is a partner to help us fill in learning gaps Reporting tools are excellent. Easily see: Where students are spending most of their time What topics have been lost in most recent assessment Which students have mastered or not mastered every topic And more

4 Introduction All students that have come from MAT-0018, MAT-0028, MAT-0029 or MAT-0055 at the Dale Mabry Campus have already used ALEKS. Starting in Fall 2017, all developmental math and MAT-1033 classes at Dale Mabry & Brandon will be using this product and textbook (available soon). New ALEKS template is now being developed by HCC faculty 18-week access is $65 52-week access is $85

5 Setting Up Your ALEKS Class
Select and organize content (will be done for you) Objectives (chapters) and Topics Add other assignments? Quizzes – I like to use these to help students become independent of help tools. Don’t add homework assignments. The regular ALEKS work is the homework. I use the ‘homework’ feature to create group activities for class. These activities are disabled in ALEKS and printed for class use. Trigger ALEKS Financial Aid Code (2 weeks access) Set up ALEKS/Canvas gradebook(s) to match your syllabus Assign due dates

6 To Pair or Not to Pair Pair MyHCC with ALEKS
Don’t Pair MyHCC with ALEKS ALEKS grades automatically export to MyHCC at each due date. Students MUST pair their accounts by logging into ALEKS through Canvas. Do not give your students the ALEKS course code if you choose this option. Specific directions are in this training’s Canvas course. Students will go directly to aleks.com Students will need the course code to register into your course

7 Student Introduction to ALEKS
Students can register through ALEKS.com or through MyHCC (if you pair your ALEKS and MyHCC classes). Directions for pairing are in this training’s Canvas class. Day 1 Orientation options: Show live demo through student view Use the student slides as appropriate for your course (Shown in Part 1 and in this training course’s files)

8 Day 1 Describe to your students why we use ALEKS. Explain that while it will require them to put in the time (we recommend at least 8 hours per week), they will have success in their current course and have laid a solid foundation for future math courses. Be positive! Talk to your students about the ALEKS Initial Knowledge Check Assessment and make sure that they understand that it is NOT a test. Dale Mabry classes will have a day/time assigned in a computer lab for the initial knowledge check. See ALEKS Best Practice document for more details

9 What Are My Students Doing?
View the ALEKS reports regularly to check your class progress Pie Report, Time and Topic, Progress, etc. Use the reports to send targeted s to students that need motivation, assistance or praise. Use the reports to fine tune class lecture/activities. Show students how to extend access before the trial access expires.

10 Use ALEKS During Class Can view examples through the ALEKS Pie report (after at least 1 student has completed the initial Knowledge Check) View the textbook View videos Julie Miller website:
