Natural Selection Day 2
2
Opener Sit by your name tag
Open up your Cornell notes from the reading and videos Get a chromebook Password is: Pps###### (must be a capital P, followed by their 6 digit student number) To change password go to: One capital letter One lowercase letter One number Minimum of 8 characters One special character (* ! . $ etc) WHEN DONE: Go to Google Classroom… wait for instruction

Homework: section 22.3 Crockapbio.weebly.com
Essential Question: What evidence is there to document the pattern of evolution and how it works? Read pages and take Cornell notes to answer the essential question Model this for the class
6
Reading Comp 1 Classroom Code: rd481i Click on Reading Comp 1
Answer the questions using your notes but not your neighbor! Turn in when done Return Chromebook 15 minutes

Lab Set Up
8
What happened?
9
Evolution! Artificial Selection Natural Selection mimics
And both lead to. . . Evolution!
10
Brassica rapa
12
Purpose Plant Brasscia rapa seeds
Select a plants in first generation, based on how those plants express a SPECIFIC TRAIT. Allow ONLY those plants to reproduce and produce seeds Plant new seeds Observe second generation Determine if trait has “spread” in second generation Analyze data graphically and statistically to determine if results are “meaningful” Describe your conclusions in writing and demonstrate your understanding of the concept of the idea of “selection”
13
Growing System Watch demo how to set up a “growing system”
Collect materials: Seeds Soil Fertilizer String Name tag Set up growing system Place growing systems in light boxes Clean up your mess!!!! 20 minutes
14
Unit One Learning Target #1
I can explain how natural selection works as the major mechanism for evolution
15
Cornell Notes Repetitions!!!
Going to lecture more on Natural Selection. Either Add to your existing notes Take more brief notes Listen and go over the slides more on your own time
16
Scientists knew that. . . The Earth was probably really old
BIG changes could happen VERY SLOWLY over long periods of time (geology) These facts lead people to propose that things changed darwin is responsible for figuring out the cause… natural selection
18
Natural Selection Darwin proposed a CAUSE for evolution: Natural Selection NS based on these facts: Resources are limited Organisms produce more offspring then the environment can support Variation in heritable traits exists in populations In a population, what are two sources of variation? Why is this variation important for natural selection? Mutations and reproduction
19
How does it work? What is the connection between the environment and fitness in natural selection? Darwin proposed the following: Certain traits provide an survival advantage: fitness The survival advantage of a trait depends on the environment IN SHORT: ENVIRONMENT DETERMINES FITNESS Individuals with greater fitness have more offspring Traits that result in fitness are passed on to offspring
20
How it works, cont. Big Picture: over time, traits that increase fitness will accumulate in a population Result: EVOLUTION Gene pool changed Population adapted to its environment TIME + LOTS SELECTION = NEW SPECIES
