Brief background information on asylum in the U.S.
Slide #2 shows four different pathways for foreign-born individuals to apply for asylum in the U.S. Group A are refugees living in refugee camps or countries abroad who must be approved by both the United Nations High Commissioners for Refugees (UNHCR) and the U.S. to be admitted to the U.S. as refugee. Group C includes the migrant families currently covered in the news. They applied for asylum once reached the U.S. border. Slide #3 provides details on the process that group A must go through in order to obtain approval to resettle in the U.S. The Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC) program is highly complex and is best to learn more via this link: This program used to handle primarily children arrived in the U.S. on their own. The services have now been extended to children being separated from their parents upon the families arrival at the U.S. border.
