Historical Background
Julius Caesar (~100 – March 15, 44 B.C.) - Most Powerful man in known world! Rome was a Republic with a Senate Triumvirate 60 B.C. (3 men ruling together)- Pompey, Crassus, and Caesar

Caesar Common people LOVED him Won the favor with the people. Spent $ on popular entertainment Freed farmers and tradesmen from taxes and debts Sided with the common people

Caesar Brilliant Military Strategist Fought in Gaul (France) and Britain in 54 B.C. Pompey urged senate to disband Caesar’s army. Caesar refused to do so. Instead, he marched on Rome.

Caesar Pompey fled to Greece and then Egypt, where he was murdered.
Caesar fell in love with Cleopatra & made her queen of Egypt. Won battle in Asia Minor and came home to Rome. Caesar cried “Veni, Vidi, Vici” (I came, I saw, I conquered. Pronounced in Latin – weenee, weedee, weekee)

Caesar The senate was very impressed. 48 B.C.: Named “Dictator” 46 B.C.: Named “Dictator for ten years” 45 B.C.: Named “Dictator for Life”

Caesar Object of intense jealousy with political allies He wanted to be king, BUT!!!!! In 600 B.C. Romans expelled the last king. They set up Republic with senate; they did not want a king again.
