Living Spaces 3.1 What are the ingredients of good living spaces? 3.1a) People vary in their perception of what makes a good living space

Describe your ideal place Where is it? What are the surroundings like? What is close by? How do you think your fantasy place will change as you age? why

3 What makes living spaces good or bad?
People live in widely different geographical places Some areas might be better to live in than others People have different ideas about what makes a good living space How would you find peace and quiet here? Imagine how long it takes to get to the shop

4 An attachment to place…
You form a stronger attachment to a place if it meets your needs Te strongest influence on place attachment is time- ‘how long you have lived there’ You are likely to feel more attached when you have many local friends and where there is a strong sense of community High levels of crime and may detach people from an area.

5 Is there such a thing as an ideal living space?
What are the positives and negatives of each of these 4 living spaces? An igloo village in Northern Sweden A block of flats in Birmingham, England A small village in England A house in Los Angeles, USA

7 What makes a good living space?
The answer varies according to Age Gender Home environment Men worry more about crime. Whereas women seem more concerned with house prices Young (16-40) worry about job prospects whereas elders (55+) worry more about healthcare provision People who live in rural areas are more concerned with affordable housing and urbanites (city dwellers) worry more about low crime rates.

Processes can be divided into Natural (physical) Human Available water Access to services Crime Rates Freedom of speech Soil fertility Job opportunities Risk of disease Democracy Transport links Energy sources Communications Levels of pollution Hazards e.g. flooding or earthquakes Make a table in your notes with 2 columns. One human and one Natural Add the factors to the appropriate column in your table Use page 174 of textbook to then add a letter next to each factor to say whether its Social, environmental, economic or political

Talk through issues on page 175 of text book Homework- use the following websites to produce a piece of working highlighting the differences between one of Earths best and worst places to live Include in this work information about what makes each place best or worst place to live.
