Setting a purpose As we read, let’s identify the “big idea” of the passage. Singapore is home to one of the rarest crabs in the world. It is so rare that you can consider yourself extremely lucky if you ever happen to see one. Locals call this decapod crustacean the Singapore Freshwater Crab (Johora singaporensis). The Singapore Freshwater Crab is one of three species endemic to Singapore that are found nowhere else on the planet. This crab is very picky in choosing its habitat, and it can only be found in clean and clear water. The flow of the water must be swift. It must be rich in oxygen and must have a certain pH level. In the absence of these qualities, you won’t see any of these crabs. Perhaps this is the reason why they are considered rare.

Next Step: Chunk the text into sections. As you read each section, make note of key details that support the big idea. BIG IDEA: The Singapore Freshwater Crab is one of the rarest crabs in the world.
