The figure shows how dendritic cells (DCs) and inflammation affect the receptivity of the surface epithelium of the uterus to embryo attachment. Factors secreted by DCs remove the mucin layer of the surface epithelium of the uterus, exposing adhesion molecules that will facilitate the attachment of the embryo. Further inflammatory signals originating in the uterine stroma guide the invasion of the trophoblast into the wall of the endometrium to promote successful implantation.
