2 John Adams- Review 1797………….John Adams becomes President
1797………….XYZ Affair- France requests a bribe to stop harassing American ships *Americans want to go to war (remain neutral) *Federalists try to pass unfair laws to hold on to power- The Alien and Sedition Acts Made it harder for immigrants (Demo-Rep) to become citizens Citizens could be fined or jailed if they criticized the government.

4 Jefferson’s Foreign Policy
Embargo Act of 1807 – Prohibited America from trading with foreign nations. The goal of the Embargo Act of 1807 – to keep us out of war with Britain and France by keeping American ships in American harbors. Banned U.S. ships to sail to any foreign port. The outcome of the Embargo Act of 1807– It failed & hurt the American economy BAD!

11 I CAN EXPLAIN THE SIGNIFICANCE OF 1803
Thomas Jefferson purchased Louisiana from France in 1803. This land purchase doubled the size of the United States. Supreme Court would set a precedence called Judicial Review (Chief Justice John Marshall)

13 Judicial Review Marbury vs. Madison – Established Judicial Review.
Supreme Court can REVIEW ALL LAWS to decide if constitutional or not. Chief Justice was John Marshall
