1 Writing a Narrative Paragraph
By Mary S. Roland

2 Writing a Narrative Paragraph
When you narrate, you tell about a sequence of events. Often the sequence tells what happens in a story. A story is also known as a narrative. The narrative can be fact (true) or fiction (false). A narrative should have a beginning, a middle, and an ending.

3 Brain Storm and Plan Hint: A flow map works great for sequencing.

4 Writing a Narrative Paragraph: (Example)
Topic Sentence Munko was a clumsy magician. He often dropped his wand. Sometimes he would sneeze and make a rabbit disappear. But he always got the rabbit back, sooner or later. One night Munko sneezed while doing a big trick. Suddenly Munko vanished. No one has see n him since then. Munko really was a clumsy magician. Good descriptions

5 Writing a Narrative Paragraph
When you describe a thing, give details that make the reader feel as if they are there. Identify it in your topic sentence. Use sensory words as you describe. Pretend your reader is looking over your shoulder. Be sure your topic sentence names the thing you are describing. Will your reader experience the thing as you do?

6 Follow these easy steps
Beginning: Write an interesting beginning. Present your main characters and the setting (when and where). It must include your topic sentence. Middle: Tell about a problem the main character has to solve in the middle. Tell what happens in order. (These are called the supporting details). Ending: Write an ending. Tell how the main character solves the problem. This is also called the outcome. (The ending is like a conclusion sentence).

7 What makes up a BME?

8 Main Idea and Supporting Details

9 It’s Your Turn Write a short silly narrative like the story of Munko. First, introduce the narrative with a general topic statement. Then give specific details to tell what happens in the narrative. When the events have ended, give a general statement about the outcome. Use another sheet of paper.
