During the 1960s, President Lyndon B
During the 1960s, President Lyndon B. Johnson attempted to end poverty in the U.S. with his Great Society programs.

The Great Society was similar to the New Deal because both provided direct help to those in need and expanded the role of government in Americans’ lives.

Popular Great Society programs included:

1. Job Corps: provided job training for urban youth to help them find jobs.

2. Head Start: provided billions of dollars to early education programs for low income families.

3. Department of Housing and Urban Development: administered programs to help build up low income areas of cities.

4. Medicare: provided health insurance to the elderly (over the age of 65).

5. Medicaid: provided health insurance to the poor, the blind, and the disabled.

Public broadcasting, such as NPR and PBS, was also established under the Great Society as a way to help educate and inform the American public.
