What is the Bessemer process?
“Henry Bessemer developed the first process for mass producing steel inexpensively.” (Bessemer Process) pg.1 paragraph 1 “Bessemer Process [for Sir Henry Bessemer], industrial process for the manufacture of steel from molten pig iron. The principle involved is that oxidation of the impurities in the iron by oxygen of air that is blown through the molten iron; the heat of oxidation raises the temperature of the mass and keeps it molten during operation .” (Bessemer process) pg1 paragraph 6 oxidation: the combination of a substance with oxygen

Steel Industry The contribution of steel industry in the US can be examined in three categories—economic, historical and political. Historical importance of the steel industry provided growth and changes to the United States.

Social Impacts Positives: Allowed world to have a new way of producing all kinds of things. Buildings were able to last longer and were less expensive Negatives: The steel industry production used lots of fossil fuel Caused tremendous damage to the natural resources

Economic impacts Positives: It cost less money to make the steel
- The price to buy the steel dropped. - Allowed steel to become the dominant material for large construction.

Economic Impacts Negatives: Got replaced by the basic by the basic process in 1968
