The Ear: Hearing and Balance
The three parts of the ear are the inner, outer, and middle ear The outer and middle ear are involved with hearing The inner ear functions in both hearing and equilibrium Receptors for hearing and balance: Respond to separate stimuli Are activated independently

Outer Ear External auditory canal Tympanic membrane (eardrum)
Short, curved tube filled with gland Tympanic membrane (eardrum) Thin membrane that vibrates Transfers sound energy to the middle ear

Middle Ear (Tympanic Cavity)
A small, air-filled, mucosa-lined cavity Pharyngotympanic tube – connects the middle ear to the nasopharynx Equalizes pressure

Middle ear: Ossicles The tympanic cavity contains three small bones (ossicles) the malleus (hammer), incus (anvil), and stapes (stirrup) Vibrate when sound hits them
