I’ll elaborate a little on the some legislative successes and one education/advisory success. Legislative victories include Safe Streets in the FAST Act,
FHWA's design standards (delivering letters); USDOT's first performance measure ruling; USDOT's current performance measure ruling . The key education/advisory program I’d like to briefly mention is the Multi-Modal Development and Delivery Program (M2D2), which help agencies transform culture and doctrine to be multi-modal in their thinking and actions. Michigan DOT, Vermont DOT and Florida DOT completed and Orlando regional organizations and Lynx in progress. In Vermont, local transit providers participated throughout the program as well.

3. Setting the Stage
After hearing the substance of our panelists presentations, I immediately thought of this image from Australia. It touches on some of the issues that will be discussed today. For example, transportation is about moving people, not vehicles. And before every person gets to a vehicle – train, bus, bike or car – they have to walk. Also, clearly its impossible to carry more than a few bikes on a bus, so careful planning for bicycle facilities to encourage the connection is necessary. Last, if that notion – about the need to deliberately facilitate the bicycle connection is clear – then carrying that thought to making walking to transit easy ought to be clear as well – its not somebody else’s problem, if your transit agency wants to increase ridership, then helping pedestrians and bicyclists make the connection is in your interest.
