1 Seasonality of foods Starter Task/Task 1: . Group work:
At your tables, on the sheet of paper come up with a definition of ‘seasonality’ or ‘seasonal foods’- challenge- 5 minutes to include as much detail as possible- including some examples. .

2 ‘Pass the buck’ Pass your sheet to the next table (clockwise)
When you receive a new sheet you have 1 minute to add detail to this definition Every minute you will receive a new sheet.

3 Definition: Seasonality of food refers to the times of year when a given type food is at its peak, either in terms of harvest or its flavour. This is usually the time when the item is the cheapest and the freshest on the market. The food's peak time in terms of harvest usually coincides with when its flavour is at its best.

4 Learning Intentions To develop your knowledge regarding seasonality of ingredients.

5 Task 2: In your jotter take the heading ‘Benefits of buying foods in season’ complete the diagram below highlighting the benefit of buying foods in season (using the information sheet given to you) Benefits of buying foods in season

6 Task 3: Complete the top of the worksheet ‘seasonal foods’ in your workpack- think of 2 more foods that would be grown for each season. Challenge- Try to work this out for yourself Support- Have a look at the seasonality calendar over the page if you get stuck

7 Task 4: Complete the worksheet ‘when is the best time to buy vegetables’- discuss with a partner (Pair work)

8 Task 5 Using the poster paper at your tables, work in groups to make a poster on the 4 seasons Ensure you include the following information on your poster- A definition of ‘seasonality’ Colours associated with each season Pictures of food associated with each season E.g Within your group- all research a different season- build the information up. spring summer definition Use magazine pictures to cut out and stick on where appropriate autumn winter

9 Extension Task: Complete the activity at the bottom of the ‘when is the best time to buy vegetables’ sheet.

10 Success criteria Exit cards
Individual Task: On the postit given to you by your teacher write down what your definition of ‘seasonality’ then give 2 examples. Hand this to your teacher at the end of the lesson.
