Today’s agenda Warm up Takes notes on absolute dating
Radio active dating game simulation Venn diagram on page 46
2
Warmup: 11-20-17 How are scientists able to measure the exact, or absolute age of a rock?
Label page 45 “Absolute Dating” Label page 46 “Venn Diagram of Absolute Dating and Relative Dating”
3
How can absolute age of a rock be determined?
By using radioactive isotopes of rocks and other materials Atom: Smallest unit of matter. Made up of protons, neutrons, and electrons. The number or protons and neutrons is usually the same Neutron: Neutral subatomic particle Isotope: an element with different amount of neutrons. Making it unstable.
4
How can absolute age of rock be determined?
Isotopes that are unstable break down. Radioactive Decay Half life: The time needed for half of a sample to break down further.
5
How can absolute age of rock be determined?
We look at percentage of originals to “daughters”
6
What is the best rock for radiometric dating?
Igneous

Save it on your computer and click on the link below and download the simulation. game Refer your text book Complete the handout while going through the radioactive dating game and save and upload into focus and save. When finished: Work on Venn Diagram p.46 Complete lesson 3 in the text book .
8
Draw a Venn diagram on page 46
In one circle you write 4 things about relative dating, in other circle you write 4 things about absolute dating and in the middle you write 3 common things about both.
