Learning about quadrilaterals. . Learning Target Better understand the world around me. I can identify and classify quadrilaterals based on their properties. 5.G.3 / 5.G.4 Standard:

12
Quadrilateral a quadrilateral is a polygon with 4 sides.
14
Specific Quadrilaterals
There are several specific types of quadrilaterals. They are classified based on their sides or angles.
15
BRAIN BREAK… if you could eat one of these types of quadrilateral shaped food which would you pick??? Put a symbol over your favorite.
16
A quadrilateral simply has 4 sides – no other special requirements.
17
Examples of Quadrilaterals
20
A parallelogram has two pairs of parallel sides.
21
Parallelogram Two pairs of parallel sides
opposite sides are actually congruent.
22
A rhombus is a parallelogram that has four congruent sides.
23
Rhombus Still has two pairs of parallel sides; with opposite sides congruent. 4 in. 4 in. 4 in. 4 in.
24
A rectangle has four right angles.
25
Rectangle Still has two pairs of parallel sides; with opposite sides congruent. Has four right angles
26
A square is a specific case of both a rhombus AND a rectangle, having four right angles and 4 congruent sides.
27
Square Still has two pairs of parallel sides. Has four congruent sides
Has four right angles
28
A trapezoid has only one pair of parallel sides.
29
An isosceles trapezoid is a trapeziod with the non-parallel sides congruent.
30
(Each of these examples shown has top and bottom sides parallel.)
Trapezoid has one pair of parallel sides. trapezoids Isosceles trapezoid (Each of these examples shown has top and bottom sides parallel.)

35
Parallelogram Two sets of parallel sides
Opposite sides have the same measure
36
Rectangles: Four 90 degree angles A type of parallelogram
Two sets of parallel sides Opposite sides have the same measure
37
Squares A type of Rectangle Four 90 degree angles
Two sets of parallel sides All sides have the same measure
38
Rhombus A type of Parallelogram Two sets of parallel sides
All sides have the same measure Opposite angles are the same
39

Quadrilaterals There are many different types of quadrilaterals. We identify quadrilaterals using their sides and angles. Side Angle
47
Let’s Review… All polygons are made up of line segments and angles. The line segments that create quadrilaterals will be parallel, perpendicular, OR intersecting. The adjacent sides of this quadrilateral are perpendicular. The adjacent sides of this quadrilateral are intersecting. The opposite sides of this quadrilateral are parallel.
48
Let’s Review… The angles that make up polygons will be right angles, acute angles, or obtuse angles. The angle that makes up this vertex of this quadrilateral is acute. The angle that makes up the vertex of this quadrilateral is obtuse. The angle that makes up this vertex of this quadrilateral is right.
49
Squares A square is a quadrilateral that has four equal sides and four right angles. This square has four right angles and all four sides are congruent (the same length). How many pairs or sets of parallel sides do you see?
50
Rectangles A rectangle is a quadrilateral that has two pairs of parallel sides that are equal and four right angles. This rectangle has four right angles and two pairs of parallel sides that are congruent. If all four sides were equal, would this shape still be a rectangle?
51
Rhombuses A rhombus is a quadrilateral that has four equal sides and two pairs of parallel sides. This rhombus has four congruent sides and two pairs of parallel sides. Can a square be a rhombus?
52
A trapezoid is a quadrilateral that has one pair of parallel sides.
Trapezoids A trapezoid is a quadrilateral that has one pair of parallel sides. This trapezoid has one pair of parallel sides. Can you identify which two sides are parallel? Do trapezoids have to have sides that are congruent?
53
parallelograms A parallelogram is a quadrilateral that has two pair of parallel sides. This parallelogram has two pairs of parallel sides. Can you draw a parallelogram that looks different than this one?
54
Quadrilaterals With your newly found knowledge, you will be able to identify quadrilaterals everywhere! Try it out on these!

Quadrilateral Crime Scene
71
Hello there detectives. My name is Ollie the Octagon
Hello there detectives! My name is Ollie the Octagon. Number 1 detective here at the Polygon Police Academy. We have had quite a few crimes happening in Los Angle-ous lately. Do you think that you detectives could use your great inferencing skills to help me figure out which polygons committed these awful crimes?
72
First you need to make sure you have your handy-
dandy detective notebook to write down clues! What is a polygon? How would you classify a quadrilateral? Name some quadrilaterals that you are familiar with.
73
Trapezoid Parallelogram Rhombus Rectangle Square
Let's write down everything we remember about quadrilaterals in our detective book! Trapezoid Parallelogram Rhombus Rectangle Square
74
Crime #1 A piano has been stolen from the "Hexagon Hall of Fame". We have a few clues about the suspect. Do you think you could help us figure out who stole the piano? (Write the clues down in your detective book)
75
Crime # 1 This polygon has 4 sides
This polygon has two sets of parallel sides. This polygon has two acute/two obtuse angles. This polygon has four congruent sides.
76
WHODUNNIT? Crime #1: Rihanna Rhombus
(use the magnifying glass to find the answer)
77
Crime #2 Oh no! Someone has stolen Ricky Rectangle's lucky bat
from the Amazing Angles stadium. Who could've done it?
Let's take a look at the clues we have about this sneaky
quadrilateral. (Write the clues down in your detective
book)
78
Crime # 2 has 4 sides two acute/two obtuse angles.
one set of parallel sides.
79
WHODUNNIT? Crime #2: Terry Trapezoid
(use the magnifying glass to find the answer)
80
Crime #3 What!? A double hexa-cide! Detectives, I hope you have
your thinking caps on. Do you think you can figure out
which TWO polygons commited this crime?
81
Crime # 3 has 4 sides two sets of parallel sides.
opposite sides are congruent
82
WHODUNNIT? Crime #3: Ricky Rectangle Perla Parallelogram
(use the magnifying glass to find the answer)
83
Crime #4 Just got in a call from the station. Apparently there's been
a new crime! Some little pip-squeak has been drawing
graffiti all over Congruent Court. Use the clues to help me
find this guy!
84
Crime # 4 has 4 sides two sets of parallel sides.
all side are congruent has 4 right angles
85
WHODUNNIT? Crime #4: Steven Square
(use the magnifying glass to find the answer)
86
Crime #5 Final crime for the day guys. Someone has hacked into
the geometric government data base and is trying to
officially make a circle a polygon!!! We need to catch this
criminal before things get crazy.
87
Crime # 5 has 4 sides two sets of parallel sides.
