2 Prelude in C minor, Op. 23 No. 7 Prelude by: Sergei Rachmaninoff
Performed by: Mark Arnest

3 Music Notes Rachmaninoff ( ) lived during a time of radical musical change, with the result that his early music was criticized for being too modern, while his late work was criticized for being too old-fashioned.

4 Music Notes In 1903, when this Prelude was composed, his style was still regarded as modern. Though he didn't share his inspiration with us, to me it evokes a howling winter wind, with a highly dissonant surface concealing a clear harmonic structure. A brilliant pianist, Rachmaninoff knew the secrets of writing well for the piano. His music is difficult to play - sometimes very, very difficult - but rarely as difficult as it sounds.

7 Gather Us In Gathering Song by: Marty Haugen
adapt. Rev. Dr. Nori J. Rost

8 Here in this place new light is streaming,
now is the darkness vanished away; see in this place our fears and our dreaming, brought here to all in the light of this day. Verse 1

9 Gather us in the lost and forsaken, gather us in no two just the same;
call to us now, and we shall awaken, we shall arise at the sound of our name. Chorus 1

10 We are the young, our lives are a myst’ry,
we are the old with wisdom and grace; we have been sung throughout all of hist’ry, called to be light to the whole human race. Verse 2

11 Gather us in the Buddhist and Pagan,
Humanist, Atheist join in the throng; gather us in the Theist and Seeking, give us the courage to enter the song. Chorus 2

12 Not in the dark of buildings confining,
not in some heaven light years away; here in this place the new light is shining, now is the moment, now is the day. Verse 3

13 Gather us in from all tribes and nations,
gather us in, no one left alone; gather us in, a great celebration, fire of love in our flesh and our bones. Chorus 3

19 The problem is not scientifically illiterate kids; it is scientifically illiterate adults. Kids are born curious about the natural world. They are always turning over rocks, jumping with two feet into mud puddles and playing with the tablecloth and fine china. – Neil deGrasse Tyson

20 We light this chalice as a reminder to jump into mud puddles; may the light of scientific reasoning shine bright in our world.

23 You look at science (or at least talk of it) as some sort of demoralizing invention of man, something apart from real life, and which must be cautiously guarded and kept separate from everyday existence. But science and everyday life cannot and should not be separated. –Dr. Rosalind Franklin

31 1st movement from Variations, Op. 27
Offertory Music 1st movement from Variations, Op. 27 by: Anton von Webern Performed by: Mark Arnest

32 Music Notes When talking about being ASUUC music director, I sometimes tell people, "The congregation is incredibly open to different styles of music. Why, I could play Webern for them!" Today we'll find out if that's actually true.

33 Music Notes There are composers whose approach to music was as rationalistic and scientific as that of the Austrian composer Anton von Webern ( ), but no other music so vividly conjures the image of a composer in a lab coat, experimenting with new ways to organize notes. The austere and uncompromising Variations are typical of his later style.

34 Music Notes These are composed according to the 12-tone system invented by his teacher, Arnold Schoenberg, in which the composer gives the 12 notes of the chromatic scale a set order that the composer then manipulates to create the piece.

35 Music Notes The purpose of this technique is to free music from the traditional triadic harmonic organization - and the predictable result is that such music is very challenging for audiences. It's not so much the dissonance, which is hardly any greater here than in Rachmaninoff's prelude; it's the lack of harmonic direction, as dissonances follow one another in unfamiliar ways.

36 Music Notes Within this style, Webern's music unfolds with astonishing lucidity. The first phrase gives you one of the keys to his movement: It repeats backwards from the middle, a procedure that dominates the movement. Webern points out similarities between different forms of the set by using chords that identical from one form to another, creating an environment of continual variation (hence the work's title). I hope that some of you can hear the beauty in this work.

54 from the Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1
Postlude Fugue in E minor from the Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1 by: J.S. Bach Performed by: Mark Arnest

55 Music Notes Bach ( ) was not as scientific as Webern, but his was one of the most stupendous intellects ever possessed by a composer. In this intense little fugue (the only two-voiced fugue among the 48 in the Well-Tempered Clavier), Bach uses his mind to do more with less:

56 Music Notes The second half of the piece is an almost exact repeat of the first half, with the hands trading places, and everything transposed. The passages in which the fiercely independent hands unexpectedly join in octaves are unique in Bach's work.
