Rachmaninoff ( ) lived during a time of radical musical change, with the result that his early music was criticized for being too modern, while his late work was criticized for being too old-fashioned.

In 1903, when this Prelude was composed, his style was still regarded as modern. Though he didn't share his inspiration with us, to me it evokes a howling winter wind, with a highly dissonant surface concealing a clear harmonic structure. A brilliant pianist, Rachmaninoff knew the secrets of writing well for the piano. His music is difficult to play - sometimes very, very difficult - but rarely as difficult as it sounds.

When talking about being ASUUC music director, I sometimes tell people, "The congregation is incredibly open to different styles of music. Why, I could play Webern for them!"
Today we'll find out if that's actually true.

There are composers whose approach to music was as rationalistic and scientific as that of the Austrian composer Anton von Webern ( ), but no other music so vividly conjures the image of a composer in a lab coat, experimenting with new ways to organize notes. The austere and uncompromising Variations are typical of his later style.

These are composed according to the 12-tone system invented by his teacher, Arnold Schoenberg, in which the composer gives the 12 notes of the chromatic scale a set order that the composer then manipulates to create the piece.

The purpose of this technique is to free music from the traditional triadic harmonic organization - and the predictable result is that such music is very challenging for audiences. It's not so much the dissonance, which is hardly any greater here than in Rachmaninoff's prelude; it's the lack of harmonic direction, as dissonances follow one another in unfamiliar ways.

Within this style, Webern's music unfolds with astonishing lucidity. The first phrase gives you one of the keys to his movement: It repeats backwards from the middle, a procedure that dominates the movement. Webern points out similarities between different forms of the set by using chords that identical from one form to another, creating an environment of continual variation (hence the work's title). I hope that some of you can hear the beauty in this work.

Bach ( ) was not as scientific as Webern, but his was one of the most stupendous intellects ever possessed by a composer. In this intense little fugue (the only two-voiced fugue among the 48 in the Well-Tempered Clavier), Bach uses his mind to do more with less:

The second half of the piece is an almost exact repeat of the first half, with the hands trading places, and everything transposed. The passages in which the fiercely independent hands unexpectedly join in octaves are unique in Bach's work.
