14
What should I be prepared for?
You accommodations can be your RV (most common), a hotel or a staff shelter Disaster Operations have hardship codes, for example: Cold or wet weather Poor air quality No electricity (thank goodness for that generator in your rig!) Extreme emotional distress Extreme heat and/or humidity etc.
15
What else do I need to know?
Your expenses are covered Expenses covered by ARC: Mileage to get there food, laundry, tips campground fees (if needed) honey wagon (if needed) generator fuel and propane All of these have specific guidelines that, while reasonably generous, must be carefully followed The American Red Cross (ARC) operated on donated dollars exclusively WE MUST be frugal and follow the rules
16
OK, I want to do it! How do I proceed?
Join DOVES ($7.50/1st year, $5/thereafter) Become a member of a Red Cross Chapter (Free) Choose your local chapter where you spend a lot of time OR Elkhart There will be a full background check You will be asked to provide a health status report from your doctor You DON’T have to be in perfect health to make a difference
17
OK, I want to do it! How do I proceed?
Get Red Cross training at the end of this Escapade at your chapter some training is available online you MUST be trained before going to any disaster
18
WAIT! AFTER TRAINING Now you’re roaring to go …. But you must
Wait for your chapter to send you out, it’s called “Being Deployed” You cannot self deploy. If you self deploy it is likely that ARC will not cover your expenses
19
