ANNOUNCEMENTS 2/12/18

BLACK HISTORY Month Who Am I?
I was a free-born descendant of slaves who became a famous 18th-century astronomer, mathematician and surveyor. I was considered by many to be the first African-American scientist. I was raised on a tobacco farm in rural Maryland, where I attended school but was largely self-taught in the sciences. Although I worked most of my life as a farmer, my analytical and problem-solving skills became legendary.
3
Who am I? my accomplishments were indeed impressive: at age 24, i studied clockworks and constructed my own clock from wood; I taught myself astronomy and published a popular almanac, from 1792 to 1797; I was appointed to assist in surveying the Federal Territory, the plot of land that was to become Washington, D.C.; I worked on calculating the precise measurement of the meter; and I corresponded with Thomas Jefferson on the issue of slavery and the intellectual equality of blacks.
4
Who am i? I never married and much of my personal life is now a mystery, as my papers and belongings were destroyed in a fire that occurred on the day of my funeral.
