1 Parts Of The Brain By Julia Robles

2 Big Idea There are 3 main parts of the brain: the cerebrum, the cerebellum and, the brain stem. Synapses, which are connected to neurons, are also in the brain. The brainstem connects the whole brain to the spinal cord.

3 Parts of the Brain

4 The Cerebrum The cerebrum is also called the forebrain, and it controls thought and learning. The cerebrum is divided into two halves, and, like the whole brain, the left controls logical activities, and the right takes care of creative skills. The colored parts represent the cerebrum. As you can see, there are many parts of the cerebrum. They are called lobes. The lobes are the frontal lobe, the parietal lobe, the occipital lobe, and the temporal lobe.

5 The purple part in the back of the brain represents the cerebellum.
The cerebellum is in charge of movement, balance, and posture. When you see a fly, your cerebellum tells your hand to move it away. And like the whole brain and the cerebrum, the cerebellum has two hemispheres, and they work like the others. The purple part in the back of the brain represents the cerebellum. Notice that the cerebrum (the yellow, red, green and blue parts) is significantly bigger than the cerebellum and the brain stem (aqua part). This is the cerebellum.

6 The Brain Stem The brain stem controls heart rhythm and breathing. It also sends signals to the cerebrum and the cerebellum. The midbrain is the smallest part in the brain. It is in the brain stem. The blue part represents it. The pink part is the pons, and the purple part is the medulla.

7 Depth and Complexity

8 A Normal Day: Your Brain’s Point of View
Your alarm clock rings. Your cerebellum tells your hand to move and press SNOOZE on the clock It’s time for breakfast. Your mug of hot chocolate is hot. VERY hot. Your hand jerks away, courtesy of the cerebellum At school, you learn that Jupiter is the largest planet. A synapse fires in the brain Suddenly, the fire alarm rings. You immediately get up, a movement made by the cerebellum Back at home, your dog tackles you as you do your homework. Your cerebrum tells you to calm down your dog It’s almost time for bed. When you brush your teeth, you see a bug crawling on the wall. Your cerebellum tells your body to move away Time for bed. Your cerebellum tells you to move your hand and turn off the light.

9 Then and Now NOW Now, neurobiologists can study the brain by analyzing its electrical activity. They have also concluded many theories about the brain. THEN Back then, people didn’t know much about the brain. There were a lot of diseases that they didn’t know how to cure it or even what it was.

10 Multiple Perspectives
NEUROBIOLOGIST It’s my job to study the brain. We found out that the brain has over 1 billion synapses and neurons. When you learn something new, a synapse fires in the brain. In fact, most of the brain neurons are developed even before you’re born! The study of the brain is called neuroscience or neurobiology. PATIENT WITH ALZHEIMER’S I have Alzheimer’s, which is a disease that affects your brain and also how you move. Alzheimer’s makes your brain shrink faster.

13 Fun Facts Your brain has two hemispheres: the right hemisphere controls creative skills, and the left is in charge of logical activities. An adult brain weighs about three pounds. Some parts of the brain don’t mature until teen years. The brain doesn't reach it’s full size until age 6. An adult brain consists of 1 billion synapses and neurons. The brain is connected to the spinal cord. The adult brain is made out of 75% water Albert Einstein's brain weighs 2.75 witch is 10% less than a normal human’s brain
