5 “Auto Wreck” -- Title Think about the title: what is the subject of the poem?

6 Subject What does the poem’s title tell you about the subject of the poem? What do you “see” or “imagine” when you think of the subject / title of the poem?

7 “Auto Wreck” -- Paraphrase
Read the poem through once, and try to make sense of what you are supposed to “see” through the eyes of the author. Can you paraphrase (put into your own words) the lines of the poem?

Paraphrase: What do you “see” as you read the poem? Can you describe or explain to a classmate what the poem “says” to you?

9 “Auto Wreck”-- Symbols, Imagery, and Figurative Language
Read the poem through a second time, this time focusing on the IMAGES the author has chosen to use (look for similes and metaphors, personification, and symbols). What words does the author use to create sensory images in the reader’s mind?

11 “Auto Wreck” -- Tone Read the poem through a third time, this time focusing on the author’s tone: attitude toward the subject. What tone of voice would the author use if reading the poem aloud? What mood does the author create for the reader? What emotions do you / should you feel as you read the poem?

13 “Auto Wreck” -- Theme Read the poem through a fourth time, this time focusing on what the author’s intent was in writing it: what “lesson” or “message” or “theme” (truth about life or human nature) is the author trying to convey?
