1 GENETIC ENGINEERING-THE NEW REALITY
With genetic engineering, we will be able to increase the complexity of our DNA, and improve the human race. But it will be a slow process, because one will have to wait about 18 years to see the effect of changes to the genetic code. –Stephen Hawking PAPADOPOULOU NIKOLETA PATSIS JOHN ANTONIOU KONSTANTINOS

2 WHAT IS GENETIC ENGINEERING?
Genetic engineering is a set of technologies used to change the genetic makeup of cells, including the transfer of genes within and across species boundaries to produce improved or novel organisms.

3 ADVANTAGES CROPS Better taste and quality More nutrients, more food
New products and growing techniques. ANIMALS Better yields of meat, eggs and milk. Improved animal health and diagnostic methods.

4 DISADVANTAGES SAFETY Potential human health impact
and unknown effects. Potential environmental impacts. ETHICS Tampering with nature by mixing genes among species. Violation of natural organisms.

5 Bt –cotton is genetically modified
cotton which is resistant to pests Golden Rice is genetically modified to contain beta-carotene (a source of vitamin A)

6 Transgenic fruit obtained from
Pear and apple A Blue Rose is a genetically modified rose

7 DOLLY THE SHEEP Dolly the sheep is the most famous clone.
Dolly was born 5 July 1996 to three mothers (one provided the egg, another the DNA and the third carried the cloned embryo to term On 14 February 2003, Dolly was euthanised because she had a progressive lung disease and severe arthritis.

8 WILL WE BE ABLE TO CURE…CANCER?
Cancer happens when body cells grow out of control. Scientists have found a gene called p-53 which normally keeps cells under controll. They think that in some people with cancer, the disease begins because the p-53 gene doesn’t work properly. Experts are now looking for a way to cure cancer by modifying faulty DNA to make the p-53 gene work. The p-53 gene Cancer cell

9 CREATING DESIGNER BABIES
Advanced reproductive technologies allow parents and doctors to screen embryos for genetic disorders and select healthy embryos. Is it right or wrong? You decide.

10 GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS
You have already eaten GM foods. Some GM tomatoes for example, have Had their genes altered, to stop them from going soft while they are still growing. The GM foods we eat have all been tested for safety. But some people worry about the long term effects of eating GM foods!

11 WHY ARE GM FOODS NOT LABELED?
Because many companies make a tremendous profit out of GM foods: Monsanto $4.7 million DuPont $3.04 million PepsiCo $1.65 million Coca Cola $1.11 million General Mills $ Kellogg Co. $ Unfortunately many GM foods will remain untested and unlabeled for many years.

12 THANK YOU
