Creating POS Menus During this lesson you will be asked to follow along in your Solana environment and complete a series of exercises. Please allow approximately 60 minutes to complete the course. ‘Creating Users’ was the previous lesson in the series.

We’ll begin by taking a look at a completed Menu.
POS Menu Building – a preview We’ll begin by taking a look at a completed Menu. Then, learn how to create the Items and Categories to populate a new Menu. And next, build a new Menu from scratch.

Access POS Menus by hovering over POS then clicking on Menus. (The ‘other’ Menus is for recipes, menus and production.)

Let’s begin by looking at the relationship between POS Menus, Items and Categories. Each Item belongs to a Category that you will create. Later in this lesson, you’ll learn about Menu Name, Serving Period, Items and Terminals. Enter your Menu Name, as simple as Lunch or perhaps Week 1 Day 1 for cycle menus. Click the Blue Arrow to select the Serving Period, usually Breakfast or Lunch The Categories and corresponding Items you create show here. We’ll demonstrate when we create a Menu from scratch. You’ll drag your Items to the Menu grid. It’s Category will show on top. Double-click to delete an Item. have up to 4 Tabs per Menu. Click in the Tab to give it an appropriate name. You can have up to 5 Categories per Tab and you can drag them to appear in any order you like. Hover over them to pick a size. You will assign your Terminals to the Menu. This can be as simple as assigning all Terminals to 1 menu or assigning each terminal a unique menu, like Hot Lunch or Salad Bar. Assign the Serving Period for the Menu. Not ere: This can be used to automatically ‘flip’ to the appropriate Serving Period and Menu at the appropriate time. Items, created by you, are used to populate your Menus.

When you begin creating Items and Categories, you’ll be working in this screen. You may find it easiest to start a spreadsheet to catalog your initial list of items and their parts, then transfer the information into Solana.

Things to consider before building your Menus in Solana;
Create your list of Menu Items ahead of time, paying attention to names (be sure the cashiers understand them) and whether you’ll let Solana auto-assign the item numbers or you’ll be assigning your own Create your list of Categories ahead of time. Items are listed by Categories, usually like groupings such as Meals, Ala Carte, Drinks, etc. If using multiple Menus per site, like Hot Line, Salad Bar, etc., know which terminal assignments in Solana correspond to your sites’ serving stations. Serving Periods, per site, can be configured to automatically switch from Breakfast to Lunch and present the assigned Menu per terminal. Decide if this is the behavior you prefer and work w/ our Engineers to set up your Serving Period times. Let’s take a closer look at Categories, Items and how they’re used.

Menu building begins by adding your Items and Categories to Solana. Hover your mouse over POS then click on Items to enter the POS Items page

Creating Categories for your Items
Because each item you add requires a Category, we’ll begin there. Earned is the only category that comes with Solana. Items assigned to the Earned category will be Free but counted under the appropriate Eligibility. Click the Blue Arrow to View Categories. Let’s create a new Category. Click the Blue Arrow, then click Create New Category.

Type in your Category Name. Choose a Button Color. And check Auto Sale as needed. Then click Create to Save. Auto Sale allows the 1st item under the Category on a Menu to sell automatically as the accounts are brought up by the cashier. This is popular when no Ala Carte is being sold and you’re trying to sell a large volume quickly.

Categories- a Review Creating Categories for your Items
Categories are used to logically group items on your Menus. You will create your Categories BEFORE your POS Items because each POS Item requires a Category. Auto Sale allows the 1st item under the Category on a Menu to sell automatically as the accounts are brought up by the cashier. Earned comes with Solana. You will create and name all other Categories. Categories are color coded. Items assigned to the Category appear on the menu with this color. Select Edit to change your color.

Adding your Items Let’s preview the POS Items page You will create all of your Menu Items using this screen. Always Allow Charging overrides the Global and individual charge limits you’ve set. This item will ONLY charge, never ask for cash. Unit Cost is your wholesale cost. Student Price is the Student ala carte price. Uncheck Active if you no longer want to display this item. A Premium item will use the Student Price for Full Pay students. The Student Price must be higher than the Full Pay eligibility price. Free and Reduced students will be charged based on their Eligibility. The Item Number will auto-populate, using the next highest number. You can overwrite with any alpha-numeric value as needed. The Item Description will show on the Menu button. Space is limited so keep it concise. Some people prefer all CAPS for visibility. Check the Meal option if the item makes up a reimbursable meal. Items named Lunch or Breakfast are often marked this way Adult Price is the Adult ala carte price. Taxable is checked by default, only applies to Adult sales and will only apply if you set up tax tables.

Click Add Solana will ‘guess’ the next number. To use your own, type your value in. Making a Menu Before creating a Menu, we’ll take a brief detour to Site Setup to review a couple of things that effect Menus. Click >Admin>Schools Auto-Sale is ‘per terminal’. Be sure you check this option to turn it on. Serving Periods can be scheduled per site and switch automatically, to prevent Sales in the wrong Serving Period.
