2. The Rest that Remains Hebrews 4:1-11
1. What is the Hebrew writer talking about when he speaks of rest from our labors.
2. Man tells us that we are not required to do works to be saved, therefore we do not need rest from our labors and everyone will have rest when they die.
3. So what is the Rest that Remains?
Hebrews 4:1-11

3. Introduction
When God delivered Israel our of Egypt He promised to take them to Canaan (Ex. 3:8)
Because of unbelief, all but 2 did not enter (Heb. 3:16-19)
Thus, most prevented God from bringing them into that rest
Provoked God with unbelief and disobedience (Num. 14:30-31)

So I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites. 3. Thus, most of them prevented God from bringing them into that rest by their disobedience,
a. Is it not also the same today in America?
4. They willfully provoked God with unabashed unbelief and disobedience (Num. 14:30-31)
Except for Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun, you shall by no means enter the land which I swore I would make you dwell in. But your little ones, whom you said would be victims, I will bring in, and they shall know the land which you have despised. (Numbers 14:30-31)

4. Do not imitate your forefathers You will lose your promised rest

1. Israel’s failings serves as warning to Christians to not do the same (Heb. 3:6, 14)
but Christ as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end. (Hebrews 3:6)
For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end, (Hebrews 3:14)

2. Heb. 4:1-11 – Here we have a caution to Jewish Christians who are considering turning from Christianity and revert back to Judaism
For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. (Hebrews 4:2)
3. The Jews are reminded that they remember and “Do not imitate your forefathers”.
4. It is a promise to them that “You will lose your promised rest”.

3. When He Designate this rest, it was not for Himself alone, He was looking forward into our times.
4. His people were promised, and will have a deserved, a rest from their labors and the troubles of this world
5. It was Promised to all Faithful and Obedient in Christ.

4. Sabbath Day (Ex. 20:8-10)
"Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. (Exodus 20:8-10)
a. This is the establishment of the Sabbath, it did not exist until it was established by God in this statement.
5.Sabbatical year – every seventh year, the land rest fallow.

17. Two Ways the Faithful Find Rest
In this life – relief / release (Matt.11:28-30; John 14:27)
From guilt (2:17)
From hopelessness and fear of death (2:14-15)
From worry, anxiety (Phil. 4:6-7)
In heaven – relief from all pain, woes, discomforts, temptations, trials, etc. (Rev. 14:12; 21:4, 27)

a. From guilt (2:17) Christ bore our guilt on the cross.
Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. (Hebrews 2:17)
b. From hopelessness and fear of death (2:14-15)
and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. (Hebrews 2:15)
c. From worry, anxiety (Phil. 4:6-7)
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7)
3. In heaven – relief from all pain, woes, discomforts, temptations, trials, etc. (Rev. 14:12; 21:4, 27)
Here is the patience of the saints; here are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. (Revelation 14:12)
And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away." (Revelation 21:4)
But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb's Book of Life. (Revelation 21:27)

3. What can we do? Examine the Word of God!
a. “Fear” – cautious, concerned (1 Cor. 10:12; Prov. 14:16)
Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. (1 Corinthians 10:12)
A wise man fears and departs from evil, But a fool rages and is self-confident. (Proverbs 14:16)

And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, (Hebrews 5:9)
For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. (James 2:26)
5. Give diligence (Heb. 4:11; 2 Pet. 1:10)
Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; (2 Peter 1:10)

19. Do you have the hope of that rest?
