2. What is the meaning of Lent
Lent is a time of fasting and self-denial
Question: "What is the meaning of Lent?" Lent is a period of fasting, moderation, and self-denial traditionally observed by Catholics and some Protestant denominations? It begins with Ash, and ends with Easter Sunday. The length of the Lenten fast was established in the 4th century as 46 days (40 days, not counting Sundays). During Lent, participants eat sparingly or give up a particular food or habit. It’s not uncommon for people to give up smoking during Lent, or to swear off watching television or eating candy or telling lies. Its six weeks of self-discipline.

In 325, the Council of Nicea discussed a 40-day Lenten season of fasting, but it's unclear whether its original intent was just for new Christians preparing for Baptism, but it soon encompassed the whole Church.
Until the 600s, Lent began on Quadragesima (Fortieth) Sunday, but Gregory the Great (c ) moved it to a Wednesday, now called Ash Wednesday, to secure the exact number of 40 days in Lent—not counting Sundays, which were feast days. Gregory, who is regarded as the father of the medieval papacy, is also credited with the ceremony that gives the day its name. As Christians came to the church for forgiveness, Gregory marked their foreheads with ashes reminding them of the biblical symbol of repentance (sackcloth and ashes) and mortality: "You are dust, and to dust you will return" (Gen 3:19).
By the 800s, some Lenten practices were already becoming more relaxed. First, Christians were allowed to eat after 3 p.m. By the 1400s, it was noon. Eventually, various foods (like fish) were allowed, and in 1966 the Roman Catholic church only restricted fast days to Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

5. Is Lent Against Bible Teaching?
Lent began as a way for Catholics to remind themselves of the value of repentance. The austerity of the Lenten season was seen as similar to how people in the Old Testament fasted and repented in sackcloth and ashes (Esther 4:1-3;Jeremiah 6:26;Daniel 9:3).

6. Matthew 6:17-18
17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Also, Jesus taught that fasting should be done discreetly: “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen” (Matthew 6:16-18). Jesus’ command to “wash your face” seems to conflict with the practice of rubbing ashes on one’s face on Ash Wednesday.

7. Jeremiah 6:26 Fasting can be Good
There’s nothing wrong with setting aside some time to focus on Jesus' death and resurrection...
However, repenting of sin is something we should be doing every day of the year, not just for the 46 days of Lent.
If a Christian wishes to observe Lent, he is free to do so...
The key is to focus on repenting of sin and consecrating oneself to God.
Lent should not be a time of boasting of one’s sacrifice or trying to earn God's favor or increasing His love.
God’s love for us could not be any greater than it already is.

Is Lent an Ordinance or a Sacrament?
“Mardi Gras, literally "Fat Tuesday," has grown in popularity in recent years as a raucous, sometimes hedonistic event. But its roots lie in the Christian calendar, as the "last hurrah" before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. That's why the enormous party in New Orleans, for example, ends abruptly at midnight on Tuesday...”
Ordinance: A spiritual activity which is the activity of man, in obedience to the direction of God.
Sacrament: A spiritual activity which is the activity of both man and God. Man acts and God blesses.
I think of the ordinance as something that I do in my faith as obedience to the God I love
Baptism: A outward commitment to God
Communion: A reminder of why we are committed to God; because He loved us first

For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!
However, over the centuries Lenten observances have developed a much more "sacramental" value. Many Catholics believe that giving something up for Lent is a way to attain God’s blessing. But the Bible teaches that grace cannot be earned; grace is “the gift of righteousness” (Romans 5:17).

11. Samuel or Saul
We see in the story of Saul and Samuel, the difference between the two attitudes of LENT.
God desires obedience out of respect and Love for who He is
Man often desires obedience because he will get something from God
We see this over and over again in the children of Israel in the wilderness. They obey God as long as he is blessing them and it’s easy. But as soon as it becomes hard, they complain and stop following.

1 Samuel 15: 13-14
When Samuel reached him, Saul said, “The Lord bless you! I have carried out the Lord’s instructions.” But Samuel said, “What then is this bleating of sheep in my ears? What is this lowing of cattle that I hear?”
