1 Creating accessible online learning objects with H5P
By Nora Burmeister and Samantha O’Connor Central Carolina Community College

2 THE PROGRAM THE OLD WAY THE PROBLEM
CCCC embeds librarians in Blackboard courses to deliver online information literacy instruction. THE OLD WAY We used to piece together YouTube videos, PDFs, and other learning objects to create modules on specific information literacy outcomes. THE PROBLEM Piecemeal, inconsistent, and unengaging lessons that needed to be individually updated any time a link changed. Time consuming and difficult to maintain, easily outdated. CCCC strategic plan requires us to provide equitable services to both online and seated students. Prior to developing our embedded program, we had been unable to provide any instruction to online students. Our earliest efforts failed to provide equitable instruction. Our seated instruction is heavily reliant on discussion and insteractive learning tools. We needed on online delivery methods that provided the same.

3 THE HUNT WHAT WE NEEDED: We needed a resource that allowed us to create content that... Is accessible The content we create has to be compliant with WCAG 2.0 standards for electronic accessibility. Is embeddable We wanted the content to live inside the Blackboard course, instead of linking out to an external site. Does not require account creation Students should not have to create a new username and password to access content. Is interactive We want students to be actively engaged with the process of learning, rather than passively watching a video or reading a document.

4 H5P WHAT WE FOUND: (www.h5p.org)

5 1 WHAT WE MADE besides friends

6 Ethical use of information More advanced: Searching in the disciplines
WHAT WE MADE The basics: Topic selection Finding sources Ethical use of information More advanced: Searching in the disciplines Navigation of specific databases Speciality modules upon request (ex: Consumer Health Information)

7 WHAT WE MADE: Assessment
H5P is not integrated with Blackboard! This is awesome because… Low stakes learning environment Students can make mistakes and retry activities This is awful because… Comprehension quizzes feel repetitive Student investment in activities may be lowered

8 TESTING THE NEW MODULES
2 TESTING THE NEW MODULES with a few brave professors

9 Average score on assessment quizzes
A/B Testing Flat Modules 72.47% Dynamic Modules (H5P) 80% Average score on assessment quizzes To assess H5P modules over traditional modules (video + activity/notes + quiz) we designed an A/B test to look at overall performance on a standard set of assessment quizzes that tested students in two different English 111 classes with an embedded librarian on what they had learned. Quizzes covered Navigating the Library’s Webpage (plus library basics), Citations, Evaluating Articles, and Finding Articles Using Summon. We saw a distint difference in the average scores in these areas. Overall, students in the traditional module scored an average of 72.47% on all four quizzes, while students in the H5P based module scored 80% on all four quizzes combined. This is the difference between a C- and a B-. Pretty staggering. I additionally found that students in the version with the H5P module had higher scores on their final research assignments (80.5% versus percent), but as these two courses were taught by two seperate instructors, I don’t want to read too much into that difference.

10 What Students Have Said
THE ROLLOUT What Students Have Said “Once I did the library activities, I was able to figure out how to read the text. Breaking each section down and answering the questions suggested by the exercises was most helpful.”

11 What Instructors Have Said
THE ROLLOUT What Instructors Have Said “Those that do well on the library lessons tend to perform better on the writing assignments. I've heard from numerous students that this has helped them - especially the piece on how to evaluate sources and the APA material.”

12 3 MAKING H5P MAGIC easier than you think

13 Let’s look at the tool (Finally!)

14 Make modules short (10-15 slides max)
Best Practices Make modules short ( slides max) Use shared account for library staff Implement quick checks to aid self- assessment Have a coworker proof your work Review regularly for updates Use color and clip art (Pixabay, Pexels, FriendlyStock)
