What is the purpose of the communication? Business Friends Research Family What is the context? Apologizing Business proposal Light-hearted conversation Getting to know someone new

4 Colloquial Differs from region to region, dialect to dialect
Has two categories: Regional jargon Usually older “It’s raining cats and dogs.” Slang Usually new and evolving “That’s so woke…” Can you identify these examples?

9 Formal You use formal writing to talk with superiors or with respected individuals or groups Formal writing has to use good grammar, advanced vocabulary, good organization, etc. Examples include: Business proposals Academic writings News reporting Government documentation Public speaking

11 How to Write in the Styles…
Colloquial You can use a lot of slang and a lot of informal speech. Casual Just use normal but good English. Not too much slang. Formal No slang! Good grammar! Try to use advanced vocabulary, detailed ideas, and respect. Example: going to the mall Co.: Dude, lets go 2 Suwon AK!! Its gonna be legit ^^ Ca.: Do you want to go to Suwon AK Plaza? Fo.: Would you be free to accompany me to Suwon AK Plaza if you have time?

Going to lunch Leaving work early Asking for help Needing directions Asking for someone’s number Asking for a recommendation Meeting someone new
