2 Learning Target 1/8/16: Students will listen to episode 2 “The Breakup” – and analyze the dynamics and chronological events between Hae and Adnan – as demonstrated through taking notes and answering guiding questions.

3 Episode 1 Review 1. What portrait has Sarah Koenig (narrator) painted of Adnan – based on the interviews she has featured in episode 1? 2. What is your reaction to Jay’s story of what happened to Hae Min Lee? Compare and contrast Jay’s timeline of events and to Adnan’s. Who do you think is lying and why? 3. What more information do you need to know from the subsequent episodes?

6 Listening Notes: Building Your Case
*In episode 2 “The Breakup,” the narrator addresses two central questions about the case. 1. Write down both primary questions that Sarah is trying to answer (2:05): What was their relationship and breakup really like? Was he so hurt that he decided to kill her? 2. While you’re listening, take notes on each character’s perspective on these central questions. (The state, Hae, Aisha, Becky, Jay, Saad, Ms. Effron, Shamim (Adnan’s mom), Donna Philips, Sarah) Try to write down some exact quotes when you can.

Homework For Monday: - Finish listening, completing vocab, and taking notes on episode 2 “The Breakup” - Answer the following questions in your packet: 1. How long did Hae and Adnan date? How would you describe their relationship? 2. Which contents in Hae’s diary stood out to you as the most noteworthy? Why? 3. How is culture/ethnicity a significant factor in this episode? 4. How did the prosecutor use this information in court against Adnan?
