1 Class Purpose This class is designed to be a refresher on our values, decision making processes, and our mission. Think of this as a plumb line to create a common operational language.

2 Class Objectives Define and communicate the organizational value of servant leadership. Understand and practice our decision-making matrix. Ensure that our values, decision making, and mission are in alignment.

3 What is Servant Leadership?
Servant leadership is the Department’s philosophy that applies to all members regardless of rank and is a set of practices that enriches the lives of individuals, builds better teams, better organizations, and ultimately creates more vibrant and engaged communities. A servant-leader focuses primarily on the growth and well-being of people and the communities to which they belong.

4 What Servant Leadership is Not…
Servant leadership is NOT a hands off, passive, soft, or wimpy type of attitude and action. It is NOT submissive, disingenuous, or self-serving. A servant-leader focuses primarily on the growth and well-being of people and the communities to which they belong.

5 Servant Leadership Is…
The servant leader is firm and assertive in managing operations, expectations, and moving the organization forward towards its vision of helping colleagues, customers, and communities. A servant-leader focuses primarily on the growth and well-being of people and the communities to which they belong.

6 Providing the Why A servant leader must listen, seek to understand the why, and then provide the why to those they lead. The servant leader must seek to understand not appease. A servant-leader focuses primarily on the growth and well-being of people and the communities to which they belong.

7 Qualities of Servant Leadership
Values Diverse Opinions Cultivates a Culture of Trust Develops Others Helps Others Encourages Others Explains Not Dictates Thinks We or You, Not Me Thinks Long Term Acts With Humility

8 “Desire to Serve, Courage to Act,
How Do We Get There? As an organization we should strive for Servant Leadership at all levels, and in order to accomplish this we should have a common process to help us achieve it. After all, what we are really talking about is putting others first and fulfilling our; “Desire to Serve, Courage to Act, Ability to Perform”

9 The Progression of the Decision
Citizens - All decisions must start with the citizens in mind. After all, service to our citizens is our core mission. Decisions that are made in the best interest of our citizens ultimately lead to stronger communities. City - Strong communities build strong cities. Decisions that are made in the interest of the City ultimately lead to stronger departments.

Department - Strong cities support and build strong departments. Decisions that are made in the interest of the Department ultimately lead to stronger units and teams within the Department. Unit/Team - Strong departments support and build strong teams. Decisions made in the interest of the units and teams ultimately lead to stronger individuals within those units and teams.

Individuals - Strong units and teams build strong individuals through teamwork, support, and working to respect and value our colleagues. Individuals make up the core of who we are. Decisions made by and for individuals must always support our mission.

14 Aligning Our Mission And Our Values
Mission Statement – The core values of an organization are reflected in its mission statement, therefore, we are updating our mission statement to infuse it with our values. This is another step in our organizational and interpersonal plumb line.

The Denver Fire Department is dedicated to: Our Desire to Serve; committing to those we serve with integrity, accountability, and inclusivity. Our Courage to Act; providing quality, timely, and professional emergency services to protect life and property. Our Ability to Perform; working together to maintain the highest standards of mitigation, preparedness, prevention, and community engagement. Desire to Serve Courage to Act Ability to Perform
