1 Mini Series on 4 People of Christmas Luke 1:46-55: “Mary”
My surrender to God brings magnification & praise to Him

2 46 And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, 49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is his name. 50 His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation.

3 51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;     he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. 52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones     but has lifted up the humble. 53 He has filled the hungry with good things     but has sent the rich away empty. 54 He has helped his servant Israel,     remembering to be merciful 55 to Abraham and his descendants forever,     just as he promised our ancestors.”

4 1. My soul magnifies the Lord (v. 46)
*He has done great things (v. 49, 51, 52) *His name is holy (v. 49) *His mercy continues to future people (v. 50)

5 My spirit rejoiced in God. (v. 47)
*He remembers His servant (vv. 48, 54) *He remembers our humble state (vv. 47, 48, 52) *He remembers His Covenant/mercy (vv. 54, 55) [cf. Genesis 17:19; 22:14-18; Galatians 3:6-16]

6 Conclusion & responses to Mary’s example
Luke 2:19—“Mary treasured up all these things & pondered them in her heart.” This involves amazement at the Christmas story & the mystery: Virgin conception & birth; Incarnation (God taking on flesh & becoming man) in the person of Jesus.

7 Conclusion & responses to Mary’s example
Luke 1:29, 34; 2:19, 51—Mary was troubled, pondered, asked questions, pondered & treasured things in her heart. All of these things in Luke chap. 1 & 2 involved the following for Mary, Jesus’ mother. (A) Her memory…she “treasured up all these things.” (B) Her affections…she “treasured up all these things IN HER HEART.” (C) Her intellect…she “treasured up all these things & PONDERED them in her heart.”

8 Conclusion & responses to Mary’s example
This Advent & Christmas season may I use my memory, my affections, my intellect to surrender to God and magnify & praise Him!
