Wonder and amazement inhabits here. William Shakespeare
Weddell Seals (Leptonychotes weddellii) with Bird. This docile penniped (fin-footed carnivore) with its comical, smiling face is arguably the most appealing of all the Antarctic seals. Weddells live in the McMurdo Sound, 800 miles from the South Pole, farther south than any other mammal. In the fall, the females gather on “fast ice,” ice connected to land, to have their pups. The pups weigh about 60 pounds at birth and 6 weeks later when they’re weaned, they weigh up to 200 pounds. (c) Ralph Bovard, MD, St. Louis Park, Minnesota.
