Examples of how to properly respond to questions:
I will use questions from “Papa’s Parrot” as an example: (You do not have to write the questions, just complete sentences as your responses!) In the past, Harry and his friends would visit Mr. Tillian after school because the children liked to buy candy and sample the different types of nuts. If your answer is like this: Because they liked to buy candy and nuts. YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE CREDIT!!!!
5
Another example: In “Papa’s Parrot,” the character Harry has a greater responsibility to be understanding because his father is not used to Harry not visiting each day after school so he is feeling neglected and lonely. If your answer looks like this: Harry because his father is lonely. YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE CREDIT!!!
6
One more example: In the story, Rocky reveals that Mr. Tillian’s feelings have been hurt by the fact that Harry no longer comes by the store. Mr. Tillian has been lonely so he kept telling Rocky how much he missed Harry. If your answer looks like this: 3. That Mr. Tillian’s feelings are hurt. YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE CREDIT!!!
7
Punctuation, Capitalization, Formal WORDS
Each sentence should have correct punctuation, especially END punctuation!!! Each sentence should START with a capital letter. Every proper name of a person, place, etc. should start with a capital letter. YOU KNOW ALL OF THIS!
8
PRONOUNS You ABSOLUTLEY CANNOT use a pronoun UNTIL you have named it FIRST!!! Examples: They started going to hamburger places instead of going to his store. WHO did?? WHOSE store???? It SHOULD say: Harry and his friends started going to hamburger places instead of going to Harry’s father’s (or Mr. Tillian’s) store.
9
Pronouns AGAIN It started talking to him telling him what his father had been saying. WHAT???? WHAT started talking? To WHOM? Telling WHO? WHOSE FATHER??? It SHOULD say: Rocky started talking to Harry, telling him what his father had been saying.
10
YOU Try IT!!! Fix these sentences!
He was lonely so he bought it to keep him company since he quit coming to the store after school. He got mad because it kept saying, “Where’s Harry? Miss him!” They used to talk and joke at dinner every night. He threw candy at it because it made him feel guilty for neglecting him. It was about a boy who quit going to the candy store after school. They would hang out at other places instead.
