“A Kind of a Fix” Crime and Puzzlement 3 By: Lawrence Treat

2 At 12 years of age, Fuzzy Buzzer hated his father and loved his mother, and when she ran off with a wimp, Fuzzy blamed his father and swore he’d exact revenge. Three weeks later Fuzzy came home from school to find police and an ambulance in front of his house. Told that his father had been electrocuted while trying to install a lamp, all Fuzzy said was, “How nice. But why bother with an ambulance?” Questioned by police, he said he’d bought a new fixture, real neat. Since his father was handy around the house and had done a lot of electrical work, Fuzzy had asked him to install the fixture. Fuzzy is shown below in his room, shortly after he came back from school. Study the room carefully and decide what you would do if you were the examining officer.

3 Questions to consider… 1
Questions to consider… 1. Do you think that Fuzzy had above average intelligence? 2. Do you think that he was mentally sick? 3. Do you think that Buzzer senior, an experienced amateur, would handle a live wire? 4. Do you think that Buzzer’s death was (a) accidental, (b) suicide or (c) homicide? 5. If you were the investigating officer, what would you do?

4 Epilogue… The police did examine the box and found that the positions had been reversed and that Fuzzy’s fingerprints were all over it. As a juvenile offender he was questioned informally as to when and why he had changed the writing. Obviously only he himself knew, but he refused to give any direct answers and therefore was released, but in the custody of his mother. Feeling guilty and partly responsible for the tragedy, she left her wimp and devoted herself to Fuzzy. Between her love and affection and some psychiatric help, he grew up to be tall, handsome and devious. In due time he became a prosperous electrical engineer and, on a trip to Athens, met and married a beautiful Greek girl whose name was Electra.
