Night By: Elie Wiesel Never shall I forget that nocturnal silence which deprived me, for all eternity, of the desire to live. Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to dust. —Elie Wiesel in Night

Background Eliezer Wiesel spent his childhood in the Eastern European village known as Sighet Sighet has been part of both Romania and Hungary at various times and was home to 15,000 Jews. Most were Haisidic Jews who were intensely focused on family, religion, and learning

Cont’d Elie spent much of his youth studying sacred Jewish texts such as the Torah and Talmud At the age of twelve he began exploring cabbala, or Jewish mysticism, an approach to Bible study that analyzes hidden meaning in text.

Rise to Power The NAZI Party- National Socialist German Worker’s Party, came to power in the late 1920s. The party, through it’s leader Adolph Hitler, promised to restore German pride. At large rallies, Hitler spoke of Germany’s long military tradition, it’s national character and it’s entitlement to greatness.

Cont’d To explain the impossible fall of German’s state, Hitler placed the blame elsewhere, mainly on Jews living in Germany. Many Germans responded enthusiastically to Hitler’s proclamations, and in 1933 he became a chancellor, or leader of the country.

Cont’d In 1938 Hitler began invading the lands around Germany. Britain and France declared war in The United States did not enter the war until 1941. In 1941, when Night begins, Hitler seemed unstoppable. By 1942 he controlled or was Allied with much of Europe, including Wiesel’s Romania, which was pro-German.

Did you know? Hitler’s treatment of the Jews was more than a political strategy. He was an anti-Semite (hater of Jews)

By 1938, Hitler and his secret-police organization, the Gestapo, had already imprisoned more than 30,000 Jews. Hitler also attacked and imprisoned Gypsies, people with handicaps, and homosexuals. He also persecuted anyone who disagreed with his ideas.
