Do Now… After coming into class and taking your seat, take out your class materials… No Go Geography! Yet… Turn off your phones and place them in the phone holder We will begin class with a review of the Southeast to East Asia Test…
3
Reviewing Southeast to East Asia Test!
Review the questions you missed with your table group members… If your table has a question nobody can answer, or a comment that needs further clarification, then you should call over Mr. Glueck ALSO, all points awarded for BONUS are FINAL, so no more points will be awarded for BONUS.
4
We will learn… To explain the process of global climate change To explain the effects global climate change is having on Antarctica
5
Go Geography! #58 – Global Warming…
3 CEV’s Can you name any other country on the map with a similar climate pattern to Antarctica? If so, what is it? What effect, if any, do you think the warming of the earth’s surface might be having on these places? Rest of the world?
6
What is Global Climate Change?
Global climate change refers to the ongoing changes in regional weather patterns, which are affected by the exchange of incoming and outgoing energy in earth’s atmosphere. This process is influenced by many factors, both human and natural, including the Greenhouse Effect, the increased burning of fossil fuels, changes in land use, etc. Several environmental occurrences have begun to illustrate this growing phenomena in recent years.
7
Evidence of Global Climate Change: Extreme Ice Loss
What evidence does James Balog present that illustrates the process of global climate change? Take notes as you watch the TED Talk to explain the evidence that illustrates this process… eme_ice_loss
8
Antarctica and Global Climate Change
How is Antarctica being affected by global climate? Working with your table groups, use Chapter 35 from your textbook to answer the questions about Antarctica and Global Warming.

Do Now… After coming into class quietly, takeout your class materials and retrieve Go Geography! Notebooks… 3-4 people pass back papers in the Pick Up Box (if the person is not here, papers go back in Pick Up Box)
13
Go Geography #59 – CNN10 No CEV’s Record the major subtopics/pieces of information as they are discussed in the CNN10 program today… After the program, explain what you believed the most important or interesting piece of information was and explain why.
14
Finishing Antarctica Questions
How is Antarctica being affected by global climate change? Working with your table groups, use Chapter 35 from your textbook to answer the questions about Antarctica and Global Warming.
15
Physical Features of Antarctica: Dry Valleys
Series of Dry Valleys And Studying the Dry Valleys As you watch, list as many features of Antarctica as you can that are highlighted in the videos… Then, write and respond to the following reflection questions: What is your overall impression of Antarctica? How would you describe the physical makeup of Antarctica? Based on what you observed, would you ever live there? Why or why not?
16
Animals in Antarctica: Penguins!
Antarctica is home to only six of the seventeen species of penguins. Penguins have adapted to the cold climate of Antarctica over time. Physical makeup: Their outside feathers are oily and waterproof, and underneath they are wrapped in layers of down feathers and body fat. Natural abilities: As flightless birds, penguins rely on their expert and swift swimming ability to “fly” through the water in search of krill and to escape predators such as seals. Behavior: They also huddle together in a group to withstand temperatures of more than −50 °F (−46 °C) and winds that blow at more than 100 miles (161 kilometers) per hour. 1) Emperor (30-66 kg), 2) Macaroni (4.5 kg), 3) King (15-33 kg)
17
Animals in Antarctica: Nature Narrative
You will be writing a narrative from the perspective of one of the penguin groups from Antarctica! Use your notes and Ch. 35 as your inspiration… Your narrative should explain what an average day is like for one of the groups, either surviving through life in the frozen desert or struggling to adapt to the other harsh living conditions. Your narrative should also include factual information about the physical aspects of Antarctica (at least 3 facts) Your narrative should be roughly 1 page written, or about 15 sentences
